This MOD is Beta Virsion.
And,there are some limitations.
-Un Completed LOD.
-Cockpit model is alpha version.

Requirements... You need SAS's mod environment(mod activator and UI) or HSFX for F8F-2's to work.
Put F8F-2's folder into MODs folder(Please make it if there is no MOD folder).
And then make a back up copy of air.ini and add following lines.
case SAS:
#SAS\STD\com\maddox\il2\objects\air.ini
case HSFX:
Files\com\maddox\il2\objects\air.ini

F8F has been JapanCat's WIP for a long time, so he may have that bird in more advanced stage.

JapanCat tried to be judged that an other one's F8F project has stagnated, and to be developed.
However, his project doesn't have progress more than one year.(His project progress is F8F model was modified from F6F only)
I was judged that his project had stagnated.
But..
If anyone don't want this F8F in SAS that I will not open to the public this F8F. :(

Japancat, you had earlier cooperation with Gerd on the subject of Bearcat? That is good. It is always good to see People do some Teamwork.
Now your Bearcat is halted for a reason?
No problem for Gerd to do his own Bearcat then, correct?
And it is still possible for you two to join efforts on this new plane / monster...
And i am sure that Gerd has seen and observed the "Tainan mod pack" Disaster. He, is not going to disappoint you, because he is a Member of SAS. I do not think members of SAS do this kind of insult.

Big engine, Big Prop, small Fuselage, 6 Guns...
And fly such a Plane off an aircraft Carrier. Nothing for "noobs". Need good training i think.

Just to point things out Gerd is part of the Tainan group. JapanCat left the Tainan group after complications because of the attitude that was within that group. Also JapanCat is a significantly higher ranked member on SAS than Gerd is and has the support of the admins here at SAS.
Unfortunately frequent issues like this are unknown by the majority so it's not your fault that you don't understand the problems and complications between modders but this one is like a little one on one war between both of them. So just let them deal with each other ;) Just stand back and play the observing role.

Put it this way, it's the kinda case where you wouldn't talk to the other guy unless you had to... so when their paths cross as it does now then you get this and the rest of the time the paths are on opposite sides of the earth lol. Anyway back on topic now.

Off to a good start there! One suggestion: you can eliminate the brace in the canopy. All F8F-1's and most F8F-2's were delivered with a canopy that lacked any bracing. The brace aft of the headrest and armor was introduced sometime before F8F-2 production ended and the new canopy was retrofitted to many Bearcats that were overhauled for export to other nations.

Digging the prop into the deck was a real potential in the real Bearcats. This was a fighter that you really wanted to fly off the ground with little or no tail coming up first. Same with landing, a good three point landing was the most desirable.

F8F shock absorber is able to move this much.
And, F8F's propeller and the ground clearance is very tight. :D

Your work is exquisite, glad to see you modelled the gear correctly this probably was an unusual arrangement for the time with the upper folding out while the lower folds in. Anyway beautiful model and outstanding work. You have really captured the essence of the Bearcat. I have been a fan of Grumman Cats for 60 years.

I think the release date is secondary, as it is simply a wonderful Aircraft, that deserves to be implemented in our great Simulator. The F8F is also interesting, as it offers two theaters. Hikoki46' and Korean War!

Yes, the flight model for the F4U would be far better than that of the F6F, but I hope the F8F gets its own flight model as it was a real fast climber.

Gerd's F8F really deserves its own FM.... It held several climb rate records for a LONG time, want to say until the F-15/16 came out but I may be mistaken.

I can try to find some written pilot experinces after flying restored Bearcats, maybe it'll help the FM'ers capture the feel and power of this amazing aircraft. (Consider these reports as EMPTY loadout performance since the FAA dislikes functioning 20mm's on civillian aircraft)

Gerd, first thank you for this Bearcat.
As for the skin template: I noticed these templates are 4096x4096. The skins in IL-2 folders are 1024x1024. Are these templates for skinning or something else? Also there is no black background to seperate the wings from the tail...etc.
Except for the skin confusion, I am having a blast flying it. :D

Gerd, just a few things about the skin/mapping - it'd be nice to be able to get an internals layer, for the cockpit area, which is currently basically just white, as well as the little exhausts on either side of the fuselage, and the inside of the gear undercarriage....
also, she seems to have a tendency to blow up instantly when hit - is there still some work to be done with the damage model?
i understand it's still WIP, so i guess you'll be adressing this at some point - just thought i'd point it out in case you missed it. ;)
loving this plane, mate....i've had a couple of pretty awesome missions with her... 8)

However, this part of the UV mapping may change.
Therefore, the gear template area and interior area was not included.
Gear and interior color should be selected because F8F have many colors of these.
And,
If you upload this texture then I will add it to selectable gear textures.

I think that F8F is no ammunition and fuel reduced.
But,F8F is nomal the production model of F8F-1. :D

Regarding the climb record, I saved the following text while doing research on the skins for my old N1K-F8F hacks:

"The original Bearcat climb record was established during “Operation Pogo Stick", which was conducted as a demonstration during the Cleveland Air Race, on November 22, 1946. An F8F-1 piloted by Commander Bill Leonard set a new time to climb record, from a dead stop to 10K feet in 97.8 seconds, including a 150 foot take off run. Unfortunately, he didn't get to keep the record very long. Leiutenant Commander Butch Davenport came along about 15 minutes later and set the next new record of 94 seconds, also in an F8F-1, with a 115 foot take off run. Leonard's take off was into an estimated 30 kt head wind, by the time Davenport took off the head wind was over 40 kts. These wind speeds helped to reduce the time on the ground. Both pilots were assigned to TACTEST at the time; Cdr Leonard was TACTEST projects officer. Lt Cdr Davenport was the F8F project officer. The F8F’s used were the standard Navy aircraft, armed, with ammunition. The planes were modified, however, to allow full emergency military power with the landing gear down, something you couldn’t do in a stock airplane due to safety locks.
The rapid climb to altitude was the F8F's bread and butter. The plane was to have been the solution to the kamikaze problem ... rapid climb capability, firepower, speed, with more better maneuverability than the F6F or F4U.
It's been said that Leonard and Davenport trashed the engines on their planes, but that is not correct. This was not a spur of the moment stunt; they actually practiced back at NAS Patuxent River with the same planes used in Cleveland, doing three or four practice runs each. After the demonstration they flew those same planes back to TACTEST."

Seems to be plausible enough, although I'm not so sure anymore about how long it held the record. I've read that the F-16 was the first to best it, which seems incredible; but I've also read accounts claiming as early as the F-86, and also some of the 'century' fighters. Regardless, it's a record that certainly commands respect to this day.. even though it's not a fair comparison with 'props v jets', it's some cool trivia nonetheless.

Someone said it is 9215 pounds when F8F-1 made a climbing record(normal 9850 pounds), but I don't know which record it is.

I would expect the F8F's used to establish the climb record had only enough fuel for the mission, had no ammunition, had the gun ports and shell ejection chutes taped over, and probably had the guns removed. All of this would have resulted in a lighter and faster climbing aircraft. As for the F-16 being the first jet fighter to break that record... I'm not surprised. Piston engined aircraft accelerate rapidly. As soon as you open the throttle, the power is there. With turboprop and jet engines, you have to wait for the engines to spool up. Jets tend to take long takeoff runs and the take off run is part of the climb time, so a high powered piston engined prop aircraft with a good headwind will be off the ground sooner than a jet.

A very early F-15A would have eaten any F-8 climbing in any condition (after leaving the ground and speed let's say 220 knots upward ). Same with F-104 series and F-4s ..also any Mig-21 ;) (?).

The F-4E's rate of climb would be around 7 times faster..e.g-albeit an F-8F1/2 may very well blow the Phantom away in the first 10 seconds... :D

The S-64F helicopter I fly for a living, beat an F-4 Phantom to 10,000 feet way back in the 70's. It did this as a CH-54B, but they are virtually the same machine. ;)

I suppose the real climb advantage for fighter jets comes into play at altitudes beyond 15.00 feet, but that's only a guess.

Please, keep in mind that the time-to-climb starts as soon as the aircraft begins moving. The Bearcat needed a very short takeoff ground run before beginning the climb phase. A helicopter needs no ground run. Jet aircraft, other than VSTOL like the Harrier, need a significant ground run before they can begin to climb.

I've written up the weapons.ini entries (cause I'm a neatness freak). I noticed some of the entries are showing the wrong loadouts in the setup screen.
The 150 gal. Droptank and 4x5" AP HVAR Rockets shows the 2x100lb bombs and the 2x250lb. Bombs + 4x5" HVAR show the 2x250lb. Bombs + 4x5" HVAR + Droptank loadout.

A very early F-15A would have eaten any F-8 climbing in any condition (after leaving the ground and speed let's say 220 knots upward ). Same with F-104 series and F-4s ..also any Mig-21 ;) (?).
Don't forget MiG25 ;)...0-30000m in 3min 10sec (modified)...stock one took just little over 4min for same altitude.

I've written up the weapons.ini entries (cause I'm a neatness freak). I noticed some of the entries are showing the wrong loadouts in the setup screen.
The 150 gal. Droptank and 4x5" AP HVAR Rockets shows the 2x100lb bombs and the 2x250lb. Bombs + 4x5" HVAR show the 2x250lb. Bombs + 4x5" HVAR + Droptank loadout.

F-104A will do 10,000ft from brakes off in under 42 seconds. It set this record in 1958. Just short of 30,000ft in 90 secs.
And the MiG is quicker.
A modern fighter, say the Flanker which admitedly has become the measure for all other types to compare, in 55 seconds it does about 40,000ft from brakes off. In 59 seconds it'll do the very same thing with four R-73 and two R-27R slung on pylons. It set these records in 1987/88.
F-16s are tricky vicky. Every production block is a completely different animal. Say we talk a Block 15 well it's got phenomenal initial rates and acceleration but basically isn't really much different to a MiG-23 on those angles, it has about ten times their manoeuvrability and SA though. Get some air under your wings and the MiG will easily outspeed one on any test you care to make, climb, acceleration, airspeed, time to whatever.
But you get something like a Block 50/52 and what you're talking about is something that performs pretty much the same at 25000 than it does at sea level and that's the edge the modern Vipers have.
Still a bit restricted on spools when you're dealing with the big daddies like the Foxhound, which has almost 10% more thrust at 30,000 supersonic than it does at sea level static, it's a scary beasty that actually gets quicker the higher you go and not just because of calculus, so whilst you're climbing and running out of steam it's saying oh yeah baby, come get some, keep coming.
Like what was said though mechanical torque is good for instantaneous acceleration at low speed/alt and those early turbojets needed lots of spooling, meanwhile genuine engine management was almost non-existent, you had to "handle" them, watch airflow overspeeding, pressure temperatures, material limitations, things like that.
When proper management systems appeared and you could finally treat jet engines like four strokes, they got much quicker again, but this didn't really happen too well until the 80s.

This F8F is developed to meet the three view. ;)
Therefore, I think that F8F's look short because of the IL-2 3D effect. :-\

I'm glad to hear your OK Gerd. The F2G Super Corsair is looking great. Here's something that might help with the canopy. I read this in a book about the Corsair development.
A Engineer from Republic (Makers of the P-47) came to Vought with a bubble canopy from a P-47 and the blueprints, and pressure specs also. It was the whole canopy, including the front windshield.
If you look at a picture of a P-47-D25 with the bubble canopy, and a picture of a F2G Super Corsair with the bubble canopy they have the exact same canopy including the front windshield.
I don't know if you could use the bubble canopy from the game or not, but you'll have a basic idea where to start.

I just gave it a try on my Modact 3 4.10.1 installation but unfortunately went into a 60% (=missing FM) CTD. Putting the buttons from the F-8F in place doesn't work either since then other FMs from the SAS buttons are missing.
I'd tend to say that if the F-8F refers to the Sea Fury or Corsair FM, there seems to be some naming issue. Otherwise, if it already has it's own FM, it might be adviseable to use and/or include DiffFM into the test package.

Found it Gerd.
Actually I didn't notice first hand that your 4.10 package contained a whole com/maddox/il2/objects/air.ini and gui/game/buttons structure. After deleting those two folders from the pack (and the empty FlightModels folder), the mod works fine in 4.10.1 for me.
The buttons were already fine for me and according to the logfile they contain an F8F-2 FM already.

Might there be a possibility in the future for a wrecked static model have part or all of cowling open, damaged or removed (because it was blown off , melted or opened by aero firefighter crew/personnel)?

I have to change the UV mapping for effective use of the skin area to do. (to share the skin area for inside wing and so on)
However, please do not worry.
I will only change the UV mapping of the one side wing.

Two gentle criticisms about the damage skin.
1) It would look more realistic if the damage was spread more randomly across the wings, rather than being concentrated along the thickest portion of the wing chord.
2) There should only be oil/fuel streaks on the wing surface if there is a fuel, hydraulic or oil tank underneath.
Other than that, the damage textures look very good!

You can always pick the alpha version from download link in the first post of this thread.
It's fun to fly and a sweet teaser for the final version, which of course takes it's time.
See, that's the difference between the bunch of franken popups which we've seen lately (which I do like to a certain extend as well) and Gerd's bearcat:
Gerd started from the scratch and he takes much care to eventually provide a bug-free, historically correct and very precise IL-2 implementation of it.
I love it, and I'd rather wait another year for the final version of this one than picking a frankened wannabe.

Rather than complaining about the time Gerd is spending in modeling the F8F, you should support him, because he is really doing something exceptional (as Claymore for the D520 and many others).
Of course it is very long, first because 3D modeling softwares are very complex and are difficult to handle.
Then, keep in mind that moders, skiners and other IL2 contributors are working for free during their free time and must also handle professional and family life.
Please also consider that they want to make something as perfect as possible and spend great amount of time in fixing details that will make the model or the skin really good.
If you want things to go faster, you may offer your help to Gerd ?

I have not seen anything on whether the over-G wingtips are going to be modeled, that would be a rude awakening to look left and right and see yer missing real estate on your wingspan...lol.
I can't wait to have this in it's own permanent slot. Looking for the final on the late Corsairs too. Can update the Korean missions I have built.

If you're feeling a bit bolder, you could make some more alpha cuts for the big holes in the tail, rear fuselage and outer wing (assuming there's underlying structure you want to show off).
Were the control surfaces of the F8F fabric or aluminum? In the latter case, the cutouts on the ailerons, rudder and elevators would look better if they were edged with a "chewed up aluminum" texture.

France received about 140 F8F-1 and -1Bs. The F8F-1 have four 0,5 in machine guns while the -1B model have four 20mm cannons. The F8F-2 is an improved version, equipped with a redesigned engine cowling, taller fin and rudder, armed with four 20 mm cannons.

Fair enough. Once it's released I can easily see the F8F being a favorite plane to skin. By the end of the Pacific war, every carrier in the fleet had distinctive wing and tail markings for its planes, so there's a lot of potential there for "1946" style skins. As long as you don't mind variations of navy blue and white, that is. . . :)

renamed heir.him to -heir.him, renamed TomCats_heir.him to heir.him, and I get no spinner either. is there something wrong with the download, I downloaded it 3 times to make sure there were no glitches and corrupt files. Are you deleting the initial F8F.2 beta and installing this download or pasting it directly over the old one?
Noticed on the arm screen the old skins put on this new model the panel lines on the port wing are missing.................. bummer!

Unfortunately, I can't test her in game today, but tomorrow I'll have some nice test fights.
While looking at the files I noticed that collision meshes are only included in D0 meshes. In all other planes there are collision meshes included in meshes for every damage level, and collision meshes in hidden meshes seem to have no effect, so I expect that all F8F parts thus can't be damaged anymore after first bullet holes appear. So, if you have difficulties to shoot down and seriously damage F8F, then you can fix that by copying all collision meshes from D0 meshes to damaged meshes (and preferably add references to hier.him also, although that seems to be optional). I can test and confirm this tomorrow since I can't be sure about this without testing.

2 different version MOD is same java class.
And, We can't use both version same time.
but We can use F8F-2 and F8F-2(Multi1) shape different.
I will consider indipendent racer MOD of F8F. :D

Was anybody able to run "Normal" version of F8F on DBW 1.6? I tried but couldn't even start the game (got CTD before appearance of loading screen). I thought it was a result of "too many planes above DBW" issue but instantly after that I deleted F8F and installed several aircraft (Spit-19 CRP, P-47N, Ten's Judy beta) instead and the game runs fine. :(

OK, I've now happily test flown this great plane and she is really good, thank you!
However, I've noticed two small issues that could be fixed in next version:
- Damaged left elevator doesn't move. This can be fixed by changing its parent to the moving D0 elevator and editing position accordingly like it is correctly done for all other control surfaces.
- UP3 and DBW has real 100 lbs bombs available, so for UP3/DBW version it is recommended to use them instead of those FAB 50 bombs.

Well, all the skins I introduced in this thread will soon be available.
Gerd is now "fine tuning" the UV mapping in order to get a easy skinnable plane.
Once the UV mapping is finished, I will upload a template and some skins.

I've juste uploaded a small pack with a template and 3 skins ( 2 US and 1 French).
They only work with the latest version of Gerd's mod.
Of course they are WIP thus weathering and paint chipping are not completely finished for some of them.
And some details will certainly change when Gerd has finished the UV mapping.

I'm starting to enjoy flying this plane more and more, and I noticed two small and easy to fix bugs:
- WingRIn_D1.msh doesn't have shadow.
- Some _Clip hook is placed too low below CF so that plane floats in air after belly landing.

I got the F8F-2 Bearcat beta flying under UP3.0 RC4, by adding a new mod folder with all the files (and using the latest online buttons from SAS) within JSGME. I enable UP3RC4 in JSGME first, then enable the F8F-2 mod's folder within JSGME. Works slick as anything for single-player, but is almost certainly not online (crt=2) compatible. To go back to standard UP3RC4, simply remove the F8F entry from the activated mods in JSGME.
If anyone wants to see how I've made it work, please PM me or send me an email ( wwsandman at wingwalkers dot org ) and I'll send you a link to the package, zipped up and ready for extraction to the JSGMEMODS folder.

Man that's some great detail work. Just two questions. How is the fuel transferred from the DT to the aircraft? To be more precise where do the fuel lines connect?

Sorry man I can't find a decent picture of a F8F drop tank installation. The best I could find looks like a 2 inch line centered just aft of the forward mounting point on center line of the tank and just aft of that is a smaller maybe electrical connection (maybe for a fuel level sending unit). It is not a good picture.

That's the same picture I was looking at but for some reason my resolution wasn't so good (Pensacola NAS). Now you have the best drop tank in IL-2 1946 and possibly the best airplane, great work.

This patch will modify F8F-2Racer only.
If you choice F8F-2Racer then F8F-2Racer have a small canopy .
In Other case F8F-2 have a canopy normal. ;)

Try to disable some other Mod planes you don't use, maybe you have hit the java limit.

a 70% CTd is usually caused by something you messed up in the objects such as ships or vehicles

strange because I also enabled DBW AI Mod, and F8F worked.

I also don't see any common classfiles with any DBW AI mod version and I too have both enabled and I can fly F8F without issues.
Thus my theory for the AI mod conflict is that there may just be a bit too many planes (and/or other mods adding more java code) installed to get a crash caused by the java code memory limit. AI mod is one of those mods adding more java code, and thus activating it may get you above the java code memory limit while without AI mod you can still be below limit and have stable IL-2. To test this theory you'll just have to disable some mods that add more java code and check whether you can have both F8F and AI mod simply by disabling something else.

Umm... my DBW1.6 folder doesn't have such many MODs or class files...
Not only F8F.
F-51Seahorse(in other topic I was introduced from Milantarik) has the same problem.
With DBW AI MOD 70%CTD, but error log shows nothing bad, recording is stopping at a strange point.

Maybe some of those mods have surprisingly big classfiles since the size of classfiles actually matters instead of number. Anyway, you can just try to comment some air.ini entries for those additional planes and disable their mod folders temporarily to test whether you can fix F8F and F-51Seahorse by disabling others.
BTW, have you looked for possible conflicts with those FreeIL2modding mods and SAS AI mod? I haven't tested them and it is also possible that there is some conflict that just breaks some references for carrier planes and thus those two carrier planes don't work.

one question are the two gauges on right side of cockpit going to be for fuel gauges, and seems needles of altimeter get lost as they get to bottom of gauge.

squadron & signals "in action" book (p30) says the cockpit is same for all variants but the nightfigthers. So the cockpit drawings must be the same for F8F1 & F8F2 and nightfigthers must be different because of radar screen addition.

As much as I understand your image shows the "generic" layout of F8F cockpits except for the -1, -1B and -1N.

I had referenced to the F8F of FSX screenshot at first. However,I lookup not historical point.(meter layout and so on)

I have been gone a while and just saw this great plane had an update. I love this plane. One question though. Does anyone know how to change the default pilot from Japanese to American?
EDIT: Nevermind. I got it. I copied the Pilot1mat,Pilot_Do.msh and the PilotPipe_Do.msh from the F6F-6 folder I had in my mods and replaced them in the F8F-2 folder. If anyone else does this be sure to back up your F8F-2 folder just in case.:)

Default Field of view is extremely close in the cockpit we have now, is it possible to move it back a skosh?..like the one in the FSX screenie?............... I know you can fiddle with TIR and set it, but default would be good too.

It is very simple logic. ;)
We can develop MOD for other flight simulator as same as IL-2.
And,We can import 3d model to IL-2 from other flight simulator.
However, I can not distribute it.(This is my minimum rule) :-\

Gerd, is there a work around to get your Bearcat flyable in 4.09?.............. those are the only planes I can get to work in HSFX 6.0. It's bad enough you can't get Jet Pack 1.1 to work so you can get the Skyraiders back along with the Fury, and CAC Sabers, Migs.
If there was a link in here somewhere for that I absolutely missed it..............

I checked F8F MOD in environment of 4.09m & SAS_ModAct2.3_Beta.
I can fly F8F in this environment. :D

The environment is HSFX 6.0........................
The only planes I can get to work in it are tagged 4.09. I'll try putting it in at the very bottom of the air.ini.
update:
I put the ini info at the bottom of the air.ini, the game loads, I go to QMB pick the F8F, pick loadout, but you can not see the plane in the viewer screen, you hit the button and nothing happens.
When you hit fly it loads and you get "Mission Loading Failed: Null

Got this installed in HSFX 6.0.1 and it works well, didn't use the Tiny Tims anyway, put those on the late Corsairs, and escort them with the Bearcat in 46 Invasion of Japan scenarios..

That is a known bug with old version of P-47 cowling and prop mod. Just redownload it, remove old version and install current one to fix it.

I'm unable to get the F8F2 to show up in game, everything else is OK except that one bird. It's in the plane list but it's not selectable like the F8F2 Racer. Thanks TC

Look into 3do/plane/Textures inside your P-47 cowling mod. The new version should only have MechaCommonP47.tga there. If you also have MechaCommon2.tga still there, then that is the conflicting file and you just haven't removed the old version. I checked that the download link gives the updated version.

in my modact 3.06 4.101, plane works great! but loadouts not appearing in game. only appearing in the customization screen, for example, i choose the droptank, it appears in the window, but in game only the clamps that hold the droptank appear, the tank itself is invisible...

I installed the aircraft in HSFX 7.03. I got a message "Loading Mission Failed:null". I made a minor change though. I did not include the racer F8F in air.ini. I just want the combat F8F. Im sure that is not the cause of the problem. Or is it?

If anybody wants it, I could upload a standalone version of the F8F I (only very sort of) made, by taking a beta version of the F8F from a link that was still live in this thread, and overwriting the old 3d with the new 3d and sounds from the final version (with the F2G). It works pretty well (using it in 4.13), should work in all versions 4.10+, and (unlike the version with the F2G) doesn't need Engine Mod (or Jetwar, although Jetwar is more of a requirement for the F2G). I flew both versions and felt no discernible difference between them. Just in case people are interested.

So I got the Bearcat working in 4.12.2m running VP Modpack......apparently it was just as simple as dropping it in my mods folder and add it to my air.ini :P Learning so much these days!!
I did have CUP WAW before, and for some reason I remember the Bearcat having a more finished up cockpit than the one in the download link in this thread. Am I making stuff up in my head again, or is there a cockpit repaint available somewhere for this?

You can always check the SAS-1946 section for cockpit repaints and EXTRA goodies ;)

How can you change the 20mm to 50cal , I wish to have the F8F-1 For late pacific missions, the same as the FM-2,

I tried to put this planes pack in HSFX 7.03 .
The F-8F does not work .
The F2G gets a freeze at 30 % loading in QMB .
Even with the new URA ( 45 ko ) .
The F-8F Racer and and the RareBear work .
Is there a fix for the non-working planes , please ?

Does anyone else have the issue with this aircraft rolling off the side of the carrier after landing? (Sorry if this has been asked before and answered, I have looked through this thread but couldn't find the answer.)
Besides that...like the F7F and A-1, I can't stop flying this bird!
