Title: Il-2 1946 graphics
Post by: Drewm3i on January 17, 2013, 07:14:17 AM
I have il2 1946, but I don't know how to make it look its best. What steps do I need to take to optimize it. I have read about dark blue world and other mods, patches, and tweaking config files. What else do I need to do. I want it to look as good as it can.
Thanks
I have this laptop if it helps.

If you google "il-2 1946 best ati settings" then you can find stuff like this:

All you need is to edit your conf.ini file in the game root, but make a backup first.

What about ultra pack, dark blue world, hsfx, plutonium effects, etc?

These packs will not make it harder for your pc. It is the graphic settings and effects that kills fps. The packs have the mods sfs packed and will load faster with a great deal of planes

I'm brand new to il-2, but I'm not worried about my pc running it. It is brand new and can run all modern games on low/med settings. However, I was under the impression that tweaking the file could only do so much, so modders developed these mods which enhanced to visuals and sfz in il-2 because its old. For example, dark blue world helps the water and what not? Am I correct? If not, what do these mods do and do I need them?

If not, what do these mods do and do I need them?
Too much, way too much to mention what all these mods do.
If I were you I would fly around with default IL2 and install DBW (if you are an offliner) or install UP (if you are an onliner) after a couple of weeks and see the difference.
More planes, better cockpits, better sounds, improved landscapes, more maps to fly over, pre and post WWII stuff etc etc.
Just look in the screenshot section how the game have changed compared to default IL2.

For example:

To get better water you need to set perfect setting in game and water = 3 in conf.ini on ati or 4 on nvidia. you also got some mods making water more realistic . it has as I know nothing with DBW to do.
You need to be patient and read the topics, use the search function and figure out what you want. The modpacks are mainly a collection of Plane and objects and maps. If you want all this mods installed singel via mod act your game going to use a lot of time loading

This is difference. That one's coming soon. In the meantime you can fly a HUGE variety of Korean Era to mid-50s planes thanks to JetWar 1956 pack (included in DBW pack, and earlier version in UP as well) https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,15649.0.html (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,15649.0.html)

You have no idea how much has this sim been expanded by community, in spite of virtually no official mod support (modders are treated by game developers as hackers, porbably because mods bring more stuff to game than devs could ever handle. Don't be surprised if you get attacked on 1C forums by other users for using mods. Ignore them, or simply don't go there as the community is no more centered around official updates.

cheers

That's awesome. It seems as if these mods make the old il-2 have way more effects, planes, and GRAPHICS than any other combat flight sim. All of this sounds great, but how should I get started? Where(and which) patches should I get? What mods to start with? In what order? I prefer offline campaign-based flying if that helps. Is it possible to put all these mods in the one main game?
Thanks for the help thus far. I look forward to learning more.

Start by backing up your IL2 folder when you've patched it to 10.1.
