Title: Guide to getting your IL2 modded
Post by: SAS~CirX on March 02, 2010, 02:22:09 PM
*This is a guide for guys who want to manually mod their games. If you want to install a pack, visit the UltraPack site.

So, you have IL2 1946 installed on your computer, and you found this website, and  now you want all them new airplanes immediately.

So you download some stuff and stuff up your game.

What did you do wrong, and what SHOULD you have done?

Shed no more tears, because here is the …
IDIOT’S guide to modding your IL2 game, written especially just for YOU. :)

Ingredients:

Make sure you have downloaded the following:

1)   A installed copy of 7Zip, or alternative Unzipping app of your choice: http://www.7-zip.org/ (http://www.7-zip.org/)
2)   The latest SAS Modactivator for Clean Installs: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/board,176.0.html

What you need to already have:

3)   A Working Installation of IL2 1946 patched to the latest version required by your modactivator https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,8528.0.html

TIP: It is advisable to do this mod thing on a fresh install, but it is even better to also make a copy of your entire IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 folder. Keep one for mods and the other as a clean install. Read about having multiple copies of IL2 here:
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,19.0.html (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,19.0.html)

Don’t worry, you can have as many instances of IL2 on your computer as you like.

MODDING IT:

To make your game capable of seeing and using modded additions, you will need to install an SAS Modactivator

Follow the instructions in its thread to install it, and read all the readme’s included.

Then immediately Download and install our latest Buttons File: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,97.0.html (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,97.0.html)

You are now ready to go into the SAS forums and find the planes, sounds, effects, reskins, cockpits and much much more and add it to your game. For how to install mods and avoid some pitfalls, also read these threads:

Installing a New Plane (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,1353.0.html)
5%, 60% & 70% crash Troubleshooters (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,22.0.html)

I hate to be ignorant, but I have 4.09, I downloaded 7zip, the latest modactivator and buttons, put the files for the new airplanes in the right place, wrote the stuff in the air.ini, weapons.ru and plane.ru, made skin folders and my planes still aren't showing up. Do I need to have skins in the skin folder for those aircraft? Should my mod folder be in the SASMODACTIVATOR folder? Please help me, I read all the forums and I have tried multiple times. This is getting tedious.

EDIT: I think I figured out what to do, do I just take all the folders from the modactivator folder and paste them in my IL2 folder?

Ok, after a week, I give up.  The idiots guide dont help so I dont blame you if you dont want to try to explain this.  I have 4.9 ready for Ultra Pack.  I have been chasing my tail trying to figure out how to UP it.  It seems like there is a 1.8UP and a patch from 2.0 to 2.1 but where is 2.0 complete?

  I read this:  http://ultrapack.tuttovola.org/index.php/topic,1904.0.html (http://ultrapack.tuttovola.org/index.php/topic,1904.0.html)

  and this:  https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,2652.0.html (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,2652.0.html)

But I am still lost.  What is the order?  Where are the downloads?  It I pull my grey hair out, will it grow back:-?

OK, here are the easy steps. Dont do anythings else, dont stray from this path:

Make sure you have stock game 4.09m working.

Then download UP2.01 here http://ultrapack.tuttovola.org/index.php/topic,1536.0.html (http://ultrapack.tuttovola.org/index.php/topic,1536.0.html)
(download Part 1 to 9, found where it says:

Quote
UP 2.01 Full web downloads at Filefront *FIXED-UPDATED!*.
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5
Part 6
Part 7
Part 8
Part 9

Download them all into a folder, then run the exe and follow the instructions.

Then IF you want to mod your IL2 even more, Go here: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,7949.0.html (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,7949.0.html)

That is all. :) let us know how it goes.

I guess some people are not meant to have UP.  Well, at least not me.  I am having issues with my installs.  I downloaded the nine parts of UP on to a folder I made on my desktop.  I then found my backup of plain vanilla IL2 plus 4.8 and 4.9.  I installed it in the same Ubi soft folder as my IL21946HSFX.  It looked like this.  C/Program Files/Ubisoft/IL21946  and IL21946HSFX/  So I started the UP install by clicking on the setup file.  And now I have neither HSFX nor UP.  I have to start from scratch.
All I can say is Fuck my Life.   :o
I am sure it has nothing to do with UP.  The PC somehow ruined both copies of IL2.  This is just a stumbling block as I have the disks and all the patches.  I just need to vent cos I somhow ruined my most played game at the moment.
I will give it a whirl again this weekend and keep you all posted.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP.  8) My incompetence is noone's fault but my own  :P

Cheers.

Captains Log:  Every attempt to get closer to the elusive UP 2.1 ends in dissaster.  So far I have reinstalled IL2 twice.  When I run the UP installer, it goes for about 30 seconds then stops.  It says  CRC error then something about incompatability and lastly it suggests that my UP download is corrupt.
So I guess I need to start over with the download of UP.  Other than that I have no idea what could be wrong.  I followed the instructions to the letter.

I feel for you, mate. But do yourself one enormous favour. Go here:

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,19.0.html (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,19.0.html)

And read it, and get multiple copies of IL2 on your PC for you to work withh. You realy dont want to continue ionstalling all that UbiSoft malware they call copyprotection .

then download this EXE: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,1117.0.html (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,1117.0.html) which will make it able for you to play all those copied unmodded versions without the DVD. (modded games have their own new exe)

I always have 3 installs going. A clean vanilla 4.09 (which I use for other testings), then a clean modded SAS Moadct 4.09, which I use to test mods on, and then a big fat UP2.01 which is the one with the huge skins and missions folder, which is for fun.
I had a HSFX4.0 version also at a stage, you can have as many as you have space for.

I always have a clean 4.09m game backed up somewhere else, that I can copy and paste and use, leaving the original unscarred.

Also, dont put them in program files, especially if you are on vista or 7.

Good luck with the downloads. Took me a week to DL UP2.01

Thanks for your patience and support.  I guess putting both copies of the game in the same folder was not a good idea.   :(
I have read the topic you recomended and I have a couple of questions.
Ok, I install IL2 4.09m to the  D/My New IL2/IL2 1946.  I keep that as is.
Now I take my HSFX copy and add it to D(D is my other HD, not my OS) D/HSFX IL2/IL2 1946HSFX/.
So I get lucky and make a third copy and put it in D/UP IL2/IL2 1946UP.
Here comes the question.  When I go to play IL21946UP how does my pc know I am not clicking on the exe for IL2 1946  or IL2HSFX ?  Do you give the exe's different names?  I hope I have explained myself well...

Thanks again guys, I have new found strengh.

Thank you all for your patience and hard work.  I now have three copies of IL2 working.  Here is the short of it.
Putting IL2 in program files was confusing the computer.  I have Win XP Pro but still it confused the installs.  Installing UP into one folder(4.09m) made the other folder,(IL2+HSFX) corrupt.  So, I first backed up my old copy of IL2+HSFX.  This was the game i played most of the time.  I then uninstalled IL2 completly from C/program files.  I have two hard drives so I used my secondary hard drive (in my case "E") and created a folder called "IL2 GAMES".  This is where I made my first install of IL2 plain vanilla in "E/IL2 GAMES/IL2 4.09m".  I updated it to 4.09m then copied it to another folder and renamed it "IL2+HSFX".  I put it back in "E/IL2 GAMES next to "IL2 4.09m".    I ran the HSFX installer and pointed it at this folder.  After all was good, I used my old HSFX back up to update skins, controls(user folder), missions ect.   At this point I had two working copies of IL2.  Now I went for gold...
At this point I had to re-download UP 2.1.  no problem.  Took a day or so cos I took my time. In the meantime that IL2 4.09m was copied and renamed "IL2 4.09mUP".  I put it in "E/IL2 GAMES next to the other two.   Now I ran the UP installer and pointed it at "IL2 4.09mUP".
Ok, so now I have a folder in my "E" drive named "IL2 GAMES".  Inside there are three folders.  IL2+4.09m/ IL2+HSFX/ and "IL2 4.09mUP"

I see a couple of things out of place (like samples)...

You have NOT told me what you did, if you want help BE PRECISE: which version of the game did you install? To which version did you patched it? etc. I asked what exactly means "won't start" and yet you don't say.

I haven't patched anything. What I meant by won't start is that it will show a blank screen for a few seconds, then quit. I have 1946, 4.09.

I haven't patched anything.................... I have 1946, 4.09.
you see, because of how hard it is to actually make sense of what you're trying to say, is also why it's really hard to give you any kind of decent advice.
the above two sentences, for example, totally contradict each other...
if you have 4.09, then you must have patched the game....so why say you haven't patched anything, to just add to the confusion.
if you  have the stock, pout-of-the-box game, it will be version 4.07m....
you need to patch it firstly to 4.08m.....
you then need to patch it to 4.09m.....
as crazyflak said, you need to test the game between each patch update to see if it still works.
sounds like you have done something wrong in the process, start over from scratch.
once your game is patched to 4.09m and working, make a backup copy of this entire working 4.09m version, and stash it somewhere safely for future use.
with your working 4.09m version, you are now ready to mod your game, either using a Modactivator, or a pack such as UP or HSFX....
follow instructions precisely for whichever mod version you want to install.
if you mess up during the process from here on, you can always try again using the backup version you made - ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP COPY READY!
good luck!

Have you got someone willing to help a sub idiot add a plane?

I readily admit to being an almost total illiterate on the PC. I have printed out numerous tutorials, tried every possible permutation of the words in the tutorials over more than a month, and have achieved exactly nothing.

I have got UP201 up and running, but I can't get anything else added to it. I have a degree in history from an accredited university. I thought that I had excellent reading comprehension talents. But I can't get bloody any additional planes to work. I get a 60% crash every bloody time. I've read all about how to fix that problem. Nothing works.

I think I've narrowed it down to misplacing the plane mod file in the MODS folder. As soon as I add the air.ini line it crashes. I've got the bloody buttons. My game doesn't care. Before I go starkers can some kind soul take me by the hand and walk me through the process step by step in the plainest possible language, so that a micro cephalic dolt, such as myself, can fly the Fokker G-1, my favorite WWII aircraft.

Back in the day when I was building models one of the guys in the modelling club had been a G-1 Pilot. He had escaped to England and spent the rest of the war flying Whitleys and Halifaxes for the RAF. He always spoke fondly of the G-1, claimed it could rip a Bf110 a brand new behind. I want very badly to fly that plane in the game to try to get a feeling of what he experienced. There are a few hundred more additions I'd like to try as well. But first I have to get just one to work for me. Have pity on a dolt.

Most planes come in a double file or folder.
Check your plane to see that there are not two folders.[one inside the other]
If so put the second one in your MODS folder.

It is great that you have UP2.01. After that, download this https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,7949.0.html for UP, if you have not already. Then immediately download and install the latest buttons for 4.09 from https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,97.0.html

Just a quick question- do you still need to enable the mods with JSGME, or does SAS Modactivator do it all?

Hi, guys. I am new to mods and I know that my english isn't really good since it is my second language, but I think I did everything right. However I am unable to launch the mod. Everytime I tries to launch the game from the Modactivitor, it just shut itself down. And if I launch from the game.exe, nothings changed in there. I did install the botton file and my IL-2: 1946 is up to date version 4.101. And I did created the shortcut for the JSGME and reset its "start in" section, and I did add all those lines in air.ini file and other files. Can anyone give me a hand please. Much appreciated.

Sorry, forgot to mention, I was trying to install the newly released 1956 mod

Wow, thank you for reply me so fast sir. It's not about how far does it load, it's everytime when I open the IL-2 launch, it pop up a window with 3 opions: launch IL-2; setting; and exit. After I press launch IL-2, a few seconds latter, the window disappeared and nothing happens. It doesn't load the game at all. If I use the orginal icon from the orginal game, it just load the original game and nothing is changed in there. :(

This time, it did not ask me to create "MOD" file, but it launched the game. However, I activited some mod like "6DOV IR traker", but nothing have changed in the game. :(
I know this is probably too much to ask, but may I ask to post a video tutorial to teach us newbies how to install. A billion thanks.

Hello, guys, I don't mean to trouble you. It just for some reaon that the "6DOF Track IR mod Classfiles" doesn't work. After I enable it, the only thing it allows me to do is that I can roll my view. But I still can not move side ways (both vertical and horizantal) nor zoom in and zoom out. I just want to ask if anyone knows about how to fix this issue. Thanks a lot.

Sorry but I'm kinda lost on the SAS folder and the #UP# folder.

1) Are the mods in each folder able to work with eachother like mixing SAS mods with UP mods in the SAS folder?
2) Seems like there is a conflict when the modact is put into the main folder because UP doesn't seem to recognize the SAS buttons in UP's new STD folder. This is basically a curious statement.
3) How exactly should my mod folders (SAS, UP) be configured to be able to work in the same environment? I don't feel this is necessarily something that someone could just stumble across because I haven't found anything written yet to support this.

Had I been able to understand the tutorials, I wouldn't be asking these questions. Not saying they are hard but maybe I'm too slow for this.  :(

Well, hehe, I had to quote myself because I just had a eureka moment. SAS and UP are separate duh. lol. And SAS is and has always been intended for offline. Ok you can kick me in the face cirx. lol. I've read this over and over but it just now clicked and my game is running great switching between online UP and offline SAS. Now my only questions are the mods because most mods I ever had were meant for jsgme and UP. Maybe you could throw me a lil snippet of how to look at this concept because I have read that prefix's will have to be changed but still that is a tad confusing but then again not really. In no time I will be on my way.  8)

dont bugger around with jsgme unless you understand it well enough to know the answer to the questions. Just install things manually yourself.

I understand jsgme perfectly, and even I dont bother with it. I use it to activate or deactive the stuff that came with the installs in jsgme, because those are put into jsgme correctly and for a reason. Everything else I install manualy.

So it realy mystifies me how some guys who dont even know how jsgme's filestructure work, time and again insist on installing every little thing through it, and always come crying when it is a gigantic fuckup.

As I said in the Modact tutorial: if you are not comfortable with the workings of JSGME, then dont try and do tricks with it.

I dont know what you mean with prefixes. Just grab the mod you want, and install it at the correct depth in the specific mods folder for the specific game you want. Mods for SASModactivator go in #sas, mods for up3 go in #UP#. nothing to it. Make sure they are at the correct folder depth and it will be fine. (eg #sas/yourmod/classfiles )

As you have figured out, sas modact reads nothing from the #up# folder, and vice versa.

G'day .
I have never installed the modact before but noiw I have the latest kick ass one.
I used to make my own mods folder which I put inside the folder which I named myself ok ?.
then activated it through the JSGME, no problems.
Now I have the modactivator I can't find a "mods" folder, on reading what info I could work out I gather the #SAS folder which sits in the main game folder is the place to put mods now? do I just drop my ships and planes in there and then do the paper work ?, the map mods folder I understand, I put my maps in there and twiddle the all ini. I am sorry I am a bit "slow" as I have a head injury from 2009 and still suffer from , how you say, comprehension difficulties, when now trying to grasp something new.As well as memory losses, (lots of notes I must now make  :-[ (very frustrating as I know what I want to do but it just won't connect sometimes ) I am still fighting a work cover case with it as it happened at work. grrrrr
so,  as it stands there is no "mods" folder anymore , the mods folder is in fact the #SAS folder in the main game folder ,as the activator will read that first , I drop my planes/ships etc into that folder and twiddle the ini's and ru's, (oh yes by the way, some maps come with _tex folder do I add the stuff inside that folder ie: open addon map's_tex folder, copy /paste what is inside to the mapmods/maps/ _tex folder that came with kick ass modact ?)  um, i think that is all i need to know ,
thanks in advance for the advice and any corrections to my way of explaining.
regards
Sharkzz

ps, you dont happen to be working on a brain mod by any chance ?  ;D

Never mind getting moded up, this Idiot cant even get the first patch on to my 4.07 copy. I would rather pay £10 or more, for a straight forward download or dvd disk than have all this pissing around.Ive been to S.A.S. M4T and other sites that I am sick of the sight of, and have waisted days(no weeks) trying to get up to 4.10.1.. And got noware. exept 3 system restores.!! What I really want is to get up to D.B.W. But I think Ive got more chance of going back in time to join the R.F.C or old R.A.F. to find out for myself...   "Rise of flight" do idiot proof downloads and mods. So why do "il2" have to make it all so f***ing complicated.??????     Dose anyone know of an easy option to update.??? Coz I cant be assed with all crap anymore, game disks and mice will be taking flying lesions very soon.  help!!...

John Howard, you make me laugh ;D
This is just so easy to install. -------------> READ AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS.

I mean, really man, this is the "Idiot´s Guide to installing the game" what more do you
expect us to do? Its so damn easy to do.

Or would you prefer us to write the "Guide for Brainless Primates how to install the UP+DBW+DBW1916" ?

well "MAX" what I expected was a "one click,& done for dummys".. I dont even know how to get this sim to be on my HD in two different places, so I can leave one intact while I fuck up the copy.I literaly dont know zip. Glad to be of some amusement. Oh and by the way, done another system restore since last post. In answer to my original question, Im guessing no R.O.F style download for brainless primates then. just keep laughing smart ass.

yep , IL2 1946 4.07m from disc,1st step, load onto your computer, once loaded and it works, cut paste your game folder somewhere else other than your C drive. then remove the game via un install from control panel. download DBW fucking big one stop pack, which will all in one stop shop get you from disc to DBW 1.71 as well as UP3 RC4 AND DBW 1916.. then all should be as good as gold old bean. Keep a stiff upper lip and keep smiling John Howard. ALL too easy m8, enjoy.

Vojska87 if Windows doesn't recognise the files at all then make sure you have an archiver installed - winzip, winrar or similar is needed to open mods as they are all compressed for easier downloading
