A gift From Beo and now to you. The XC-47X
« on: August 30, 2010, 03:48:38 PM »

Highlander and I have been helping out Beowolf with some of his projects. When he had come out with his XC-47C I had mentioned to him that if this C-47 Floatplane had of been pressed further into war it may had been used for sub hunting and/or anti shipping around their island bases. Well, Beo never responded to that pm and I just thought he was too busy with his work. Yesterday I got a pm from him saying here was the XC-47X as a gift to Highlander and myself.
Highlander and I decided we would like to share this with all of you. ;D She's a great plane and does surprisingly well as a torpedo plane.

Now, this was a gift and there may be updates later but for now its " AS IS " so please if there are any issues, be kind. This is Highlander's and my gift to you guys. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have been.

Credits Beowolf for this really cool plane.
Highlander for his great skin.
Anyone I didnt mention that may have worked on Beo's XC-47C

i'm glad you guys like it.  it has quite a few features that the older XC-47 didn't have...ie, reworked ladder in 3D to fit against the fuselage properly, fake radar pod added to wing, torpedo/bomb/flare brackets under the central fuselage, torp/flare/bomb loadouts...  etc...  plus uses the reworked fuselage without the long antenna wires.  plus has a reworked class file that allows for it to be used in missions to sub/ship hunt.

like BA noted...  it's surpisingly effect as a ship hunter (especially with torps!)  even with no aiming reticle, it lumbers down and can put it's two fish right up a ship's tailpipes---ka-blooie!  lol!  i found it amazingly easy to spear ships by lining up with their wake and dropping the torps a few yards from the stern...then pulling up sharply to get away before the big boom.  however, if the ship is set to high...those AA guns will shred you pretty quick.  but set to normal, no problemo.  the AI uses it VERY effectively and can get those long range side shots pretty darn good.

anyway, it's got the usual frankenplane water type bug...but i've not found a solution for that yet.  but heck, you never notice that anyway if you're FLYING your own plane!

i was proud to offer it to BA and Highlander as they've helped me countless times...  but i am glad they in turn offered it to the fine members of this site, too.  that's the SAS for you!  we ain't stingy!

Does anyone know why when I put this plane on autopilot, whenever it gets to the waypoint before LANDING it says the airplane is damaged and then the engines go off?  I tried this in several maps with large bodies of water and water only maps... just wondering if I have a glitch on my install... I have UP 2.1 and I add mods manually through JSGME.  It takes off and flies fine.

I have UP 2.1 and I add mods manually through JSGME.  It takes off and flies fine.

i use it in 2.01 and i've never heard or seen a damage report from the plane or AI unless it got hit by AAA fire or the ground/mountain crash.  i just retested and again did not hear or see any hit sign.  as to the cutting off engine before landing...  that is normal IF you are trying to land on the water where there is NOT a certified water landing area, ie like in the open sea or something.  if your mission way-points are taking you back to a certified water take-off/landing area, then the AI will fly to that water base, ask permission to land (just like on a land airport) then when it gets permission it will drop altitude, reduce throttle...and land properly on the water way, cutting off its engine 'after' it taxies to the proper full stop area.

NOTE:  if you try to get the AI to land on the open ocean where there is NOT a sea plane base...  it does not know what to do, so it searches for the largest body of open water near it, cuts its engine and glides to a landing in the water.  that is the way it is 'supposed' to do when not near a sea plane base.  otherwise, it would either fly around until run out of gas and crash, OR, it would try and glide/land at the closest LAND BASE and blow up as soon as it touched the runway.  that's the game code and how its written.

i tried/tested this repeatedly after i saw your post and that's how it did every time i tried it.  ---so if you're having some strange problem i don't know what to tell you since my game will not duplicate what you said.  i don't know if adding mods thru JSGME has anything to do with it or not...  my Mods are actually made to do the simple 'manual' install...  ie, dropping the plane folder into your MODS folder, putting the proper entry into the STD/air.ini file (that's in the MODS folder.)  simple as pie, and only takes a few seconds to do.  perhaps doing it thru JSGME is putting something in the wrong place...so try it the manual way and see if it helps.  i don't know what else to tell you.  let me know if you find out anything.

Beo,

Thank you for your reply.

Looks like all the seaplanes do the same thing.  Yes, I was flying in the ocean with no seabase in it.  I was sure that at some point the series allowed seaplanes to land in open water areas without simply cutting off the engine (via AI), they would actually land on water... don't know when this changed...  I guess that is why I thought it was odd (result of modded game overall, not this particular mod).

What I notice is that if you skip using the skip time command (I assign that to Shift+] ) when you get to the next to last waypoint, as long as the last waypoint is LANDING, then the engines are turned off... now if you try to click on the same command again, it displays the message that it is broken...

This may not be a big deal, but I've written so many missions in the last 10 years due to the development of UQMG that I can tell you this behavior is different than what it used to be; fairly sure stock 1946 did not behave that way.  (that is, a seaplane base was not required for seaplanes to land on large bodies of water properly - as in not simply cutting engine and gliding down)

Anyway, no biggie and I surely appreciate you replying.

an by the way, this is a really cool mod.  if in the future you were able to add a rudimentary sight for aiming and a bombsight, it would be super! (I would they would have added that even to a prototype to test accuracy...)
