ALPHA Magallanes 1:1
« on: August 10, 2010, 08:40:42 PM »

Well, ive been working on this since a long time. Spend a lot of hours doing research and looking for airfields in the area.

The map is far from finished, had to do the texturing manually...hard time looking for decent textures for glaciers, pampa, forests, etc... Anyway, wanted to share it. Any help would be appreciated. (This is a map useful for what-if confrontations between Argentina and Chile in the 50s or later).

DOWNLOAD (Sorry, alpha stage so is only manual install)

Some pics:
AREA OF OPERATIONS (some missing part at the north, yes, map is huge)

"Los Cerros Airfield, Tierra del fuego"

"Darwin Mountains from Haycock point"

"Punta Arenas"

"Seno Angostini"

What an awesome work!

I don't know if the european guys would be interested on it, but for us the argentineans in the forum yes.

Flying from Ushuaia northead is a wonderful experience. Does the map reproduce something of the landscape?

Regards,

Great Job Mr. O  :)

How long have you spent on this great project of yours.  ???

Yes textures are time consuming I am sure I spend more time in Google Earth than with my wife.

ha ha  ;D

Cheers Kirby

All airfields are places, except from the Puerto Natales one.

Rio Gallegos have the 2 fields of the 50s. Ushuaia have the 50s dirt runway (North to South). Punta Arenas have the Old Bahía Catalina airbase with the 3 runways. Isla Dawson airbase is a later layout i think, maybe from the 70s. Tierra del fuego have a lot of small airbases, specially the argentinian side, most with the Pucara, or the Corsair/SNJs on mind. All the bases have realistic size and dispersions (can look at Google Earth).

Some info for a What-if scenario: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snipe_incident

The geography is realistic and the scale is 1:1. Right now it uses the default textures since my skills with textures are not good. (ANY HELP WELCOME). Most of the West area is not textured, only have the default forest cover, the rest has been han drawed.  The road network is not done yet, and still need to add some Estancias and Puerto Natales city.

Wonderful use of objects. Those towns are really stunning and fun to fly over at low level :D
