South Africa WIP Project 1
« on: May 16, 2010, 03:08:08 AM »

Well,

After getting back on track with life events I've just recently gone map crazy.

Good to be doing it again  ;)

This project I will FINISH really ;) as I am sure some of the admin will appreciate this map.

After loading it up today the landscape is really interesting.

A couple of questions;

I'm looking to base this map from around 1945 to 1950 known S.A.A.F. bases at that time would be greatly appreciated.

Textures

Does South Africa suit a Zimbotho style map or more of a Med map?

What in game textures suit South Africa?

When I finish a rivers template will put some screenies up

This is going to be a genuine gift to Admin and any others who may be interested in this map

I don't want Admin sending me to District 9 so I have to genuinely finish this project  :D

Cheers Kirby

this is a pleasant surprise!
i've had an SA map in the pipeline for a while now, was having difficulties getting the microdem/SRT data, and generally just held up with all sorts of other stuff... :P
i'll have a look at some of the textures i was playing with, but generally it would tend more to the Zimbotho style in most cases. some areas, like the Cape, have a pretty unique look to them, with the local vegetation 'fynbos' exclusive to this part of the world.
also, the 'Cape Dutch' style of house was very prevalent in those days.
If someone could knock together a few basic house objects in this style, it'd really suit the map. i can provide necessary info/pics, if anyone's up to it.... ;) :D

Out of curiosity - what's the scale to be? If it's 1/1, the area shown will be immensely huge ... but the landscape features are in any case very striking and worth the scenery value alone ...

A friend of mine who works for Air France and has been almost to all places in the world told me SA was the most beautiful country he ever visited, and I trust him for that !!

So farang had better take his time, and do his very best, like there was no tomorrow if he doesn't want to be banned for life by the admins here...!!  ;D

I'll post some screenies up in a day or so after I have sorted out the textures and have done a river template.

I was amazed at the landscape as well when I loaded it up yesterday.

SAS Malone I'll have a look at Google Earth around the Cape to see if I can nab a decent texture for that area.

agracier I use 1:4 so even though it does look huge it loads up quite easily

Mymap_c is 200 kilo to 1 pixel map_h and map_T are 200 kilo to 1 pixel but I scale those images down by 4 from the Mymap_c.

Thanks for all the responses.

I was thinking that Admin and others could fly the shit out of Rudi's SAAF harvards, possibly very late Spits, Sabre's?

I recall A day at the museum thread.

Interested in early SAAF base locations

Hey All,

Here's some screen shots of a heap of mostly new textures from SA.
The only textures used from another project was the Zimbotho map. Only two mind you.
The rest of the textures have all been captured from SA.

I hope the people in SA can advise if it all looks good or if some things have to be changed.

I am working on the coast now using three textures from the region.

Just the beginning next a lot of editing.

Just a little teaser for you all.

I really hope The Cape of Good Hope looks reasonably realistic especially to the people that live in South Africa here on the forum.

All textures have been taken from the area.

I am gradually working on the coast line am about half finished.

I wish I had a lot more texture slots available South Africa has a very unique landscape.

Cheers Kirby

I've made about 40 reasonably decent textures from Google Earth and have chosen the best ones. No more in game looking textures, new field textures etc.
