With the release of the the Il2 version of this machine I was about to complete this model.
The kit is the well known Revell release. The painting is done by brush and Revell colors.
One thing that bugged my about the paintjob of red 12 (the only option in the kit) was that the instruction insisted on a 81/82 scheme on the upper surfaces of the wing and the rudders. In fact most profiles for the 12 show this scheme (in contrast to the 10 usually having overall NF paintjob) so I decided to do some research myself. I studied Smith and Creek and various other sources but was unable to find any picture of the upper side of the wings. Only side or 3/4 front views. I also could not find a statement from a witness either.
It is clear that the leading edge in fact is dark, but I could not detect any segment indication for two shades of "dark" in any shot. in several pics one can compare the color very good to the actual black of teh engines and to me there is no visible difference - so the leading edge may indeed have been black (in contrast to another b/w pic of red 8 where the difference in the dark upper wing color is clearly visible to the black of the engine) So I decided, since I wanted to do a nightfighter scheme on the wings, that maybe the leading edges where painted black to go in line with the housing of the engines, which can be clearly idetified as overall black.... just my interpretation.
I always found the thought funny of going to lengths with the NF scheme on the fuselage but leave the wings as they came.
I also removed the original radar antennae and replaced them with thinner pieces.
