The main operational version of the Ki 43-I, although being of the variant "c", was retrofitted in the field, replacing one 12.7mm Ho-103 by a 7.7mm Type 89 machine gun (the conversion could be done rather simply without structural changes and was performed because the early versions of the Ho-103 were not reliable and subject to jamming. On occasion a shell could detonate in the barrel damaging the engine). It could also carry one or two drop tanks, as well as 15 kg bombs.
