DBW and TFM
« on: July 04, 2014, 12:40:48 AM »

new to IL2, reading and studying on this great forum ... but the more i read, the more i have many questions and more and more to read to find the solution  . At the moment i have 4.12.2+hsfx 7.02, but interested in the many campaigns based on dbw

DBW: i have not installed it but i want to ask you:

- i read about the new incoming DBW2 based on 4.12.2 ... that mean that the campaigns made/based on dbw-4.10 will work on the new dbw2-4.12 or maybe not ?  i prefer to wait for dbw2 and not installing dbw, because i would prefer 4.12 to old 4.10, widescreen graphics etc ... but if the old campaigns will not work with the new dbw2 then maybe i have to review my decision ...

- i read about new campaigns based on TFM 412, but i find very difficult (it seems very cumbersome and not so clear "how to"  ) to download/install TFM ... but i do not understand the difference between DBW (and new DBW2) and TFM: are they different mods and one exclude the other or are they compatible and you can install one on top of the other ? or are they different "beasts" ? and which are the biggest pro-contra of DBW vs TFM ?

- DGEN: for dgen campaign, i read about stock sgen, asura dgen, new asura dgen etc ... but will i find/download the right dgen when i download/install the selected campaign (i mean is it embedded on the campaign download files) or i have to find/install it before to install a new campaign ?

i beg your pardon, but it is very difficult to navigate in that big universe (of IL2 mods), so your help to save me hours just to understand basic points would be very appreciated

Below is a quote from  SAS~Monty27 in this thread: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,40015.0.html

"Neither can old campaigns and missions take full advantage of the TFM-412 features, because they were not around then.  What we need are fresh campaigns and mission sets, both 412 conversions of the classics and all new collections too."

Careful attention to this topic at: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,40015.0.html will give you a very clear  "how to".

I understand that the large download and seemingly complex activation  sequence can be daunting but when you get it all working, the time spent doing so becomes time well spent.

Every update, whether Team Daidalos or the Great Modders here, may render some older missions or campaigns unusable due to map and/or new objects additions or other factors.

The simplest solution, if you have the hard drive space, is to keep several installs of the game.

A 4.10 install with DBW and the corresponding TFM and the 3 DGEN mods gives you a huge amount of content.

A 4.12.2 install with the SAS mod activator and the TFM 4.12 packs and upcoming DBW for it will be the ultimate IL2....until 4.13.

If you are a patient, a very, very, very patient being, you can follow the recommended path through  JSGME to activate each pack....be prepared for a long haul, JSGME is slow, so slow you may think it has stopped.

If, like me, you are less patient you can add each pack manually and save a day.

Whichever version you decide on, the main requirement prior to beginning is reading as much as possible on the install threads:

 4.12.2
 https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,40015.0.html

4.10
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,35424.0.html

4.10 DGEN
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,36018.0.html

The link above is the DGEN topic for 4.10 which adds over 140 dgen campaigns.

blackshark, if you are still reading, good luck and if, after carefully reading the linked topics, you still have questions please do not hesitate to ask, someone here will have the answer.

TFM, as I understand, is meant to be a supporting project of DBW. As it is now, it provides a basis for more extensive modding (like the DBW project) in 4.12.2. When DBW2 is released, TFM will be adapted to fit it as - in a way - a complementary package.

I hope that makes sense. ;)
Best Wishes!
