Welcome to the SAS ~ Read This First
« on: July 15, 2009, 09:26:31 PM »

Welcome to the Special Aircraft Service , a site dedicated to making life less complicated and more entertaining for Offline Players of IL2 1946.

We think that the modding community has a more biased focus on on-line play, and that offline players have been a little neglected. We also believe that much of the items on offer in the world of IL2 modding, are so confusingly or badly packaged and presented, that they become almost unusable. This is not deliberate. Quite simply, most guys who mod IL2 are not PR specialists, nor are they the guys who write the manuals at the software companies.

So we have started this site, for one thing, to collect the most important and essential mods, and repackage, rewrite, update and re-host them, to make our lives, and yours, a lot simpler.
The other reason for the SAS forum, is for modders to have to have a cool place where we can build, develop and present our own mods, away from the bustle of the larger sites.

This site has few rules and restrictions, so, go for it, just be cool, respectful, tolerant, and all the things your mother did (or should have) tought you to be in the company of humans. :)

Please take note:

We are primarily an OFFLINE community. Therefore it is much easier for us to bring out certain types of mod or plane than for the online guys. They have to take a crapola more things into consideration than we do. Therefore it is very very important that online players who download here take note that we did NOT necessarily qualify or test our mods for online use.

TO VIEW ATTACHEMENTS OR MAKE A POST IN THIS FORUM, YOU WILL NEED TO REGISTER AND LOG-IN

However, general browsing and dowloading is open to all :)

Rules and Guidelines for Posting:

Please take note of the following:

Quote
I understand that many members have srtong feelings about things in the realm of the IL2 world. Strong feelings about some mods, some packs, teams, forums and individuals. I want to take this opportunity to implore such members to be mindfull that there is a difference between making a civil critisism, or pointing out an error or a bug, and a personal attack. Here at SAS we will not allow any personal attacks. I believe everyone here are adult anough to understand the difference. The SAS is a neutral, A-political and FREE IL2 forum geared towards modding. Regardless of my or other's personal feelings about anything and anyone, we will not tolerate sniping and flaming.

Read the rest of that announcement here:
http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,12585.0.html

Posting Pictures:
Many folk have a 'not great' bandwidth speed, so if pictures are too big, they often have to wait several minutes for pictures to load, and this is easily avoided.
We prefer pictures to be posted in JPG format, as these are the most 'forum-friendly' types.
Size should be kept to smaller than 250Kb per pic. You will find that these work great.
Avoid posting pics in larger formats, eg: PNG format. A PNG picture is easily 10 times the size of the same pic in JPG format!

Posting Mods:
This is a private forum, not a community service. This forum caters specifically to an advanced type of offline player, and the mods posted here are geared towards that.

If you want to Post a Mod:

If you are a modder and you want to post a mod, you may find that you are unable to post a new topic in the mods sections. This is a permissions setting we made, not to keep you out, but to make work for moderators easier keeping everyone else out  ;) . To have your permissions upgraded, simply PM me, and I will do it.

If you want to post somebody else's mod:

Q: Can I post links to another topic on another forum where somebody else's mod is?
A: Yes, post that right here in the lounge.

Q: Can I post somebody else's mod myself?
A: No, unless you know the other modder and have gotten a thumbs up from them. This is not a legal thing, it is just a matter of respect.

Q: If I have taken someone else's mod and upgraded or improved it, can I post it?
A: Yes, just give proper credits.

About Double Posting:

Double posting is where the same mod gets posted in its own thread, but at two or more forums. We have no problem with this, because, posting a mod here, means it can get supported from here. It is all about support. A modder who posts a mod on another forum is welcome to post the same topic here also, because then we can provide the best support for offline players in terms of that mod. But the choice is that of the maker of the mod himself, to choose where and what he posts.

Q: But the SAS admins seem to post a lot of mods by other people?
A: Yes, but, we know those people (or, we sometimes ARE these people), and we asked first, OR, we made upgrades and changes to the mods, making our own versions (and mostly still asked first).

If it is your own mod though, go right ahead and post. If you find you dont have the capability to post in a certain forum, pm me, I will sort it out for you.

About Making Mods, Java and FM Talk and Discussion:

We dont ban people for this, but we also are not a java school or, a modding college. If you want modders to help you, use the tuotrials and tools available here and on the web to get as far as you can by yourself (you can make thousands of mods this way), and meet the more experienced modders halfway, and in private.

We do not allow the discussion of tools and techniques related to the encrytion and editing of essential game files like FM's and classes, in the public forums.

DO NOT ask us in an open forum what tools you should start off with or how to use them, or how to "start modding" or such things. Read the available tutorials, and start experimenting, and when your experiments have progressed to such an extent that you have something to show for it and cannot go further by yourself, then contact a modder for help, and perhaps they will take you seriously then.

Problems with this Board or Life in General

Upon joining the SAS, please immediately start to educate yourself by reading the Tech Help Forum guidelines here: http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,84.0.html (which includes our support policies), and read the tutorials section for all applicable self help guides: http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/board,7.0.html

To overcome most all problems with this board and everything else, we have found that the best setting is the adoption of a

peaceful and tranquil zen-like state of grace and patience

Enjoy!

About SAS and other Packs
« Reply #1 on: December 09, 2009, 07:16:03 AM »

Seems there is still a lot of confusion out there regarding the SAS and packs.

So, here are the facts:

1) We support mainly manual installations here, but, when it comes to packs....

2) We ONLY support UP 2.0 installations here

3) We DO NOT support, or provide support, or answer questions or queries about ANY OTHER PACK. This includes C6,UI and HSFX, or any other pack.

4) This is not because we are against those (most of those pack are by friends of mine, and we have helped), but because,

    a) we DONT HAVE THE CAPACITY to provide support for all those
    b) YOU have been asking for a unified pack, and for now, UP 2.0 is the closest to that
    c) HSFX is a SEOW dedicated pack
    d) UP1.8, which contains all of HSFX 4.1 (which in turn contains the latest UI and C6 content) and all the essential server mods by the Ultra guys, is the most comprehensive, advanced and moddable pack out there, and was in fact made with the help of Charlie Chap from HSFX.

5) Following HSFX4.1 and UP 2.0, there will be a nice long pause for the packers. During this time, all of us will be putting together the first truly unified pack. And when that comes out, only then, will we cease supporting UPP2.0.

I hope this makes it all clear and un-ambigious

Another thing to add on, to help keep the peace:

We dont care what you do at the other sites, but don't bring others BS over here.

If you do find a problem with a mod:

Read through the posts in that section, the fix might be listed deeper in. If you don't find a fix, respectivly report your bug, either in a PM or in the post.

Do not flame mods here just because they're not up to your standards. If you dont like it, delete it and don't post about it. The other option is to fix it yourself.

It takes alot of work to make these mods. There will always be something small that needs to be fixed, so dont worry. It will get fixed soon enough.

If you find a mod that you think was made by another modder and no correct credit is given, or you have another related problem with it, contact the original modder privatetly, and leave him to sort it out with the new modder. DO NOT take it upon yourself to make inquiries into that or make accusations in the forum to the new modder, about a mod that is not yours.

Do not go posting any racial crap about Nazi's, Japs, or anything like that. That war is done and over. Don't go starting another one.

I want everyone to understand what an "internet troll" is. Do not become one!
Quote
A troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

Quote
Fishing is the process of attempting to acquire sensitive information.
If you can't find it in the forum, then you do not need to be asking about it. Asking for "sensitive information" such as Java editing, FM editing, etc can get you into serious trouble here. Asking for it many times will get you banned.

If you can do all this, then you have started to make things easier for the SAS Team. If we are having to chase people around to slap them on the wrist or put them in the corner for a time out, then we are not getting our stuff done.

Thanks
