Work in progres map of South Vietnam.
« on: February 09, 2010, 12:56:17 PM »

For some time now Bombsaway has trying to persuade me to post a thread here on this WIP.  Unfortunately it has been ongoing for a while at AAA so for those who haven't seen it this will be a brief overview.

First of all thanks must go to Kirby, Farang65, who made this easier for me to start because he uploaded the original map in his Indochina starter pack, I just hacked and battered it into what you see now.  I had already made the map of Manam using KevinP's superb tutorial, so I had already gone through the process of creating a map from scratch, it actually worked!  A thread is at AAA if you want to have a look.

A big thank you must also go to Mark, Bombsaway, who has constantly encouraged me on by producing some wonderfull textures for the shallows and the pattie fields.

The first thing that should strike you when you see the map is the size of the rivers, they are all navigatable, that is the reason why.  Again thanks must go to the modding community for the assistance that was given with that process.

Taking a late evening cruise on a carrier sat in the aircraft's cockpit.

Landing craft ply their trade along the river.

Fishing boats on the runway.

This to me was the main area of the map I wanted to do.  The conflicts that have raged in the are since colonial days have mainly taken place on the rivers and in the jungle, so I wanted campaign builders to be able to replicate this in some way.

Here is a view of the outstanding texture work Bombsaway has become famous for.

On the river at Saigon.

And along the coast.

Mark was also responsible for the water becoming the Brown colour that everyone associates with the region.

There are currently three working airfields on land and two for seaplanes.

The airfield at Saigon, there is also one for seaplanes here.

One near Hue.

And one at Da Nang, also with a landing area on the coast for seaplanes.

At the moment there is a choice of ed map old looking and coloured.

textures are Googled.

I usually post regular updates with a link to my 4Shared account, when I next update I will post one here.  For now you will have to visit AAA for the last update if you want to look at it and play around on it.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. :)

And, hopefully somebody will make the famous boat of 'Apocalypse now' (maybe 'driveable' too?  8))

...my thoughts, exactly, Gerhard! This map is begging for a'driveable' PT boat, with one or two gunner positions to mow down the VC insurgents along the riverbanks.  ;D :D

Hello everyone.

AKD sorry to say no info ever turned up, looking forward to seeing those photos.

SAS Malone and Gerax, I'm with you on the PT boat, the roads are actually useable for the Jeep.

A driveable boat would add so much more to the immersion factor.

highlander_262, the airfields at the moment are very basic.  they were made to test how that was done, I need some good information before I can really go to town on them.

I've removed the road bridges I built in favour of making ferry crossings, the bridges don't work anyway so I don't think they'll be missed.

Here's a few views, what do you think?

These are fixed in the map builder.

Not really sure if I should just leave this area clear with the road finishing at the waters edge and leave that kind of detail for the campaign builders.

I did what I could with the objects in the FMB, could do with a working ferry.

The rail bridges will remain, thankfully the ships sail straight through them, they don't
work either but we'll need something to shoot at.

Here is a view of one of the superb textures made by the master of the shallows himself. Bombsaway.

Pattie or paddie fields, whatever you prefer to call them.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. :)

Hmm...I'll try resending.  Maybe the file was too large.

It is now getting late into February and having a week off work has given me some time to work
on the map, so here are some pics of the progress.

I've added a number of new airfields and finally brought road and rail to Bien Hoa and Saigon.

This is the airfield at Bien Hoe.

The rail line running by the airfield.

Akvadis sent me a number of maps that had sufficient detail to enable me to add a number of airfields,
Bien Hoe being one of them, although the orientation is based on Google images.
The same map gave road and rail details also.
Thank you very much Alan for the maps, I greatly appreciate your taking
the time and trouble to help with this project, the info encouraged me on.

Two airfields have been added in Cambodia, this is Pakxe.

This airfield is Kratie, my information indicates it was used by the Japanese during their
occupation. It was also used by the Cambodian Air Force.

Apparently it also had a seaplane base so I added one to the nearby river.

Also included in the maps Akvadis sent to me were details of Cam Ranh Bay and the
surrounding area. This allowed me to move my roads and rail lines to exactly where they
should be and also showed two airfields, thanks again Alan, you're a star.

Aproaching Ba Ngoi airfield, Cam Ranh Bay.

The airfield.

This is a little further along at Nha Trang.

This airfield is only really usable by the earlier aircraft such as the MS 406, it's no go for
the P-63's and Corsairs. I managed to get a C-47 and a JU-52 to land but only
from one direction, and that is rather precarious. There are a lot of hills around the field
which the AI doesn't like, so it is probably better used for trainers and such. The airfield
orientation is again from a Google image.

Tourane, (Da Nang), now has a seaplane base in the harbour, but again because of the hill there it is only operational from one direction, although to aid taxying this is set up as any normal airfield with two waypoints.

The info I have also shows the land runway here to be much smaller, and with two runways, not
sure whether to leave it as it is or try to replicate the original.

I hope to upload another WIP to my 4Shared soon so those who are following progress can
try things out and make any reccomondations. I'm just waiting for a reply from Bombsaway
at the moment regarding a texture he made for me, so if your reading this Mark could you
please check your PM.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete.

Looking good. Love the textures. Try to make them with even  better resolution if possible. Oh god, we need decent jungle forest...

Hello Kapteeni, you're certainly right about us needing decent jungle trees textures, sadly I'm not the man to create it.  I'm new to the texturing game so don't yet fully understand how most go about it.  The textures you see are googled and in an attempt to rid the tiles of the seams in Gimp they end up slightly blurry.  With the city textures I leave them as is and cover the seams with another texture, this isn't really practical with the ones like the tree texture that cover most of the map so improving the resolution isn't possible for what you see.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. :)

This is the new airfield I've made at Tourane, (Da Nang).

The layout is based on one of the maps Akvadis sent to me.

I made landing and taxi points for each end of both runways, unfortunately you can only
take off and land in two directions. Either there is a conflict with the runway points being
too close, or I've set them up wrong. Thoughts on this anyone please.   ???

Ten aircraft can be landed and parked on each runway.

The runways are a little longer than the map indicated but this allows a larger variety of
types to use the field.  ;)

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. :)
