Happy to know you both like the progress so far, thanks for the comments. :)

I've further improved the airfield at Nha Trang, it now has a runway and taxi strips.

The airfield was opened in 1949 by the French to train new pilots using the French
built Storch, Ju 52's and C-47's also operated from there.

I've used the blur option to reduce the hills around the airfield so the field can be
used from both directions.

Me taxying in, well you have to test don't you. ;)

I've also now added a proper runway to Bien Hoe.

I'm in the process of adding runways and taxi strips to all the airfields done so far,
Tan San Nhut is next on the list.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. :)

Now if we had the "Mig Killer", F-8E. (Last of the gunfighters) Never mind, I think I'm gettin' ahead of myself.

Bear in mind that little (if any?) air-to-air combat happened over South Vietnam during the Vietnam War, but it will certainly have that Vietnam flavor!

Hello all, as AKD points out there was very little in the way of air to air combat during the Vietnam war, and virtually none for when the map is intended, the French colonial period.  That said, Japanese and Vichy forces clashed in the early forties at Long San and later Thai and Vichy forces went to war during 1941, see my campaigns for both of these done on the Fabianfred Thailand map, available from M4T.  Other than that the Air Forces were mainly used to support units on the ground, so plenty of ground pounding for those who like that sort of thing.  There must have been clashes between the U S Airforce and Navy against the japanese during the war years but I have no information regarding this yet.

Of the airfields on the map, Tan San Nhut and Bien Hoe on my map have been tested with the current jets, I guess I'll also have to test the Mig 21 when it becomes available  ::), just for what if purposes you understand.

A B-24 overflight of Tan San Nhut.

A very busy airfield.

Testing the F-84 at tan san Nhut.

I hope to upload a further update to my 4Shared this week and will post the link here and at AAA for those who may fancy trying the airfields.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;)

Here is the link for the latest update.

Departing Cam Rahn bay.

I've altered the ed_map_t.tga to make this part of the map navigable.

Being on the coast you would have thought this was navigable but it wasn't.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. :)

Glad you like it so far Triad, most of the runways can take aircraft up to the P-63 King Cobra, and some the Migs and the F-84.  What I haven't tested is the sort of weapon load outs the aircraft can use to safely launch from each airfield.  The runways are longer than they probably would have been, but as yet I still have no definate info regarding this or how they were populated so things may yet change.  I've tried trawling the net for photographs of period airfields and cities but all links seem to lead to modern places, very frustrating.  It maybe there are French publications out there that contain the info I need but I have yet to come across them.  The best information I've got so far has come from Akvadis from US sources.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. :)

Here are a few shots showing recent activity on this project.

I have finally made a start on populating Saigon, here you see KevinP's road
plates being used to map out the city plan. Thanks to Akvadis I have sufficient
information to position the most important buildings.

Here is a Slovak church standing in for Notre Dame Cathedral.

Tree lined avenues. Some of these appear very wide in Google images so it may be
I need to add another road each side, though that may be overkill.

Buildings and communal areas.

The water course around both Saigon and Bien Hoa have been altered to more reflect what
you would see on a map.

Due to the fact the rivers are navigable and thus oversize the scale is obviously out so
things don't look quite as tight and neat as they would if the rivers were done in the
normal way.

The changes to the rivers course necessitated re-building the airfields at Saigon and
Bien Hoa so that has slowed things up a bit. ::)

Wishing you all the very best, Pete.  :)

Glad you like it Max, I'm sure it will be finished one day.  ;D

I keep going off at a tangent, the skinning bug you know, it's a terrible affliction. ;)
