The real problem though is that "fire for effect" would be a barrage, not just one shot from each gun, so 2-3 minutes between shots is just as unrealistic as rapid fire...and much less fun :)

Of course, you could say that the F.O. only has one gun "assigned" to him, or that he is just calling in fire from one gun to conserve ammo. Or, you could have a 2-3 minute delay followed by a whole salvo of shots. Possibly it could be modeled by installing a bunch of invisible, weightless, etc. rockets.

It also occurs to me that a F.O. calling in fire from a ship might also have fewer guns to fire for effect than if he was sighting for an artillery battery. Depending on the ship's position and bearing relative to the target, only 1-3 guns might be able to bear, especially if it was a destroyer operating close to shore.

Anyhow, enough "hand waving" about how to justify the effect. This is an amazingly fun mod, and proof of why an arty spotter plane was the most dangerous ground attack aircraft in the sky!

To make it a bit more believable and to tone it down a bit, would it be possible to put a delay fuse on your shots (like those for rockets or bombs), so that they only go off after a 2-3 minute delay?* That would sort of simulate your FO calling in the target to the battery, trajectory calculation, battery response time, shell flight time, ranging shots, etc.

A really simple trick I used when modding Fighters Anthology was to simply give the rounds a very low velocity (thus adding a time delay). An improvement on this is to give the rounds no gravity drop, but to model them like rockets with very low powered engines (this means that they take time to accellerate but eventually get up to speed - the result is that the difference in delay isn't as dependent on the aircraft's distance from the target). It is also nice to have several rounds fired in a burst and give the rounds high dispersion.

A final technique that can be used is to mount the weapon on an invisible hardpoint high above the aircraft (this is what I used when I was modding Ka-52 Team Alligator). However, in a non-helicopter sim there is the potential that a pilot could roll his plane upside down and fire rounds from underground...

However, there may be better techniques to use in Il-2. One problem with Il-2 is that it gives the round fired the aircraft's velocity - so it might require the addition of very high drag levels on the rounds). Every sim is different.

Sixer...  here's that L-5 mission i promised you for your super mod a bit ago.

pretty intense, graphics wise though the new machines should handle it fine.  (my old one struggles a small bit but does ok with it.)  prepare for a bit of a drive, so take along a Themos of black coffee and a snack.  lol.  but (i think) worth it at the end.

don't forget to load up in the Arming Screen!  lol!

guys if you don't have this mod of Six's...Get it!  it's great!

Thanks to Beowolff for this mission  ;)!

-G-

you're welcome and no problem, Gerax...  glad to showcase Six's work in anyway i can.  he does great stuff!  btw, did you knockout any of those dug in Japanese guns @ the Grassi Lagoon?   ;D  i tried about fifteen times and got A.  my copilot killed three times.  B.  my engine shot out twice.  C.  got pounced on by  Zero's once and shot down.  D.  missed and ran out of ammo 14 times. lol.  E.  actually managed to nail a few Japanese guns the last time...as i finally figured out the best approach to target.

 :D

there was a great sense of accomplishment that last run (after i nailed those guns) as i drove that lil' (shot up and smoking) bird back to the big base and sit her down.

really, this mod is SO much fun!

I fly online and have no-gripes with this mod, it was hilarous to fly this in servers with my squadron, and they thought Oh whats "Drew" gonna do with his L-5 in Air America Colors, it won't hurt us, next thing they knew, their whole base was destroyed, and I was laughin soo hard on comms.

Do you have the original L-5? You might need that to run this one.

@ Checkyersix.

Could you make a Fieseler Storch as an arty spotter too?
I know it's properly not very realistic but it would even it out between Allied and Axis.

Yes, A "Storch" would be really nice as an artillery spotter. Were they not sometimes used in that capacity during the war? If not the Storch, how about an FW-189 then?

Thanks,
