Using Skinmod is easier for all the planes included in the skinmods list.
But the point is to find the proper way to set up a new plane folder within Skinmod/plane folder,cause some use PLANE only ,others, got PLANE(Multi1) and others got; PLANE, PLANE(nationality),and PLANE(Multi1) folders and inside those some got up to 3 subfolders Desert, summer, and winter.
The trick with new planes (if they are set to be in the stationnary list), is to find out the right folders to create.
For example with the I-15 bis, a single folder I-15 with subfolder summer and it's ok
for Re 2000 I created a folder Re 2000(it) and it works
I did the same for SM 79 no joy, and I don't know why...
I guess there is an computer specialist logic under this, but for the basic user the only thing is to test....
Apart from this problem SKINMOD seems to be the best to manage the skins.

Changing Default and Static skins in game

OK Men,
I just wanted to let everyone know how to do this. So grab a chair and a soft drink....Here we go.
Always make backups of your files ..

Make sure you read the portion below and don't skip anything

1st Grab this mod from here.....it's not needed but could save you some time making folders and shows correct folder structure......
http://www.filefront.com/vp+skinmod+v1+3zip/;13390566;/fileinfo.html

2nd Make sure your config. file is set like this: Make sure you set cache to "0" then save and exit.

[game]
Arcade=0
HighGore=1
mapPadX=0.6692857
mapPadY=-0.046666667
viewSet=55
Intro=0
NoSubTitles=0
NoChatter=0
NoHudLog=0
NoLensFlare=0
iconTypes=1
eventlog=eventlog.lst
eventlogkeep=0
3dgunners=1
ClearCache=0

3rd Make a set of folders like the example above(starting with the name of mod):
Examples of correct folder structure:
MODS\"name of mod"\3do\plane\"name of plane like paintschemes folder"\desert or summer folder = if your not using UP2.0

MODS\files\"name of mod"\3do\plane\"name of plane like paintschemes folder"\desert or summer folder= If you are using UP2.0

From the picture you can see that I have quite a few already...

NOW HOW TO GET THE NEW SKIN FILES:
* load desired skin in QMB, make sure it is a blank skin... Go fly ....quit game or go to main screen.... now go to paintschemes\cache in main game folder....
Find the newly created plane folder and drag that folder to your desktop. **NOTE** That new plane folder is the correct name for the plane.
Now go to the next step

4th Place the new default skin files in the summer or desert folder

skin1o.tga
skin1o.tgb
skin1p.tga
skin1q.tga

5th Make sure the map load.ini file your using has the word "desert" or "summer" and that your skin folder matches it.
Example:
[WORLDPOS]
CAMOUFLAGE = Desert or Summer (planes skin folder must match map for it to show up in game)

Once you are done and ready to see the new skins just place them in the correct Mods folder. IF using UP 2.0 then make sure file names are correctly setup and then add to your jsgmemods folder and use JGSME mod enabler to activate.

you should now have default and static planes set to same skin....

!!!! Be aware that IL2 uses desert name for pacific theater maps, so you'll get desert default skins
on those maps too, just change plane's skin folder back to default. "summer"

Salute,
Badger

PS you can make this a sticky if you want... ;)
