Carrier Take Off Confusion
« on: April 21, 2012, 08:46:15 AM »

I have the latest version of DBW and latest Modact 3.06, the latest versions of The new Essex Class, The new Clemenceua class and The Colossus Class.  Added the F4 and would like to get it off the decks but am a complete loss now as to what mod is/are required.  I can get the F4's AI to land, no problems, I can get them to fly around and fight, no problem, but I cannot get them off the damn deck, they just plough into the ocean regardless of what I add, what I do, what I change, I have tried everything.  AND I DO MEAN EVERYTHING, I have been at it for weeks now.

I have read every thread on the subject, and there are many, but the more I read the more confused I become. I appreciate some of the guys writing these mods English is not their first language so the grammar makes matters worse.

One issue I cannot resolve, I cannot get the SAS Carrier Hotkey Mod to install in my game, I drop it into my DBW Mods folder and select the game, but it just refuses to load the game, so no Logfile to see why. I have tried that at the vanilla stage and the same problem exists, so no idea what conflict it could possibly be.  I also have the latest exe file to start the game from.

Anyone in a position to give me a simple answer to what appears to be a very complicated problem so that I can get back to making new carrier decks and things like that.  All I want to do is get my F4 AI to take off from an Essex or Clem carrier.

crazyeddie,

So, I am not the only one having problems with getting the catapult on the angle-deck Essex carriers to work. Are you using DBW 1.7.1? If so, my first recommendation to you is that you do not install SAS AI_Engine_Hotkeys_Carriers Mod. This mod is already included in DBW 1.7.1. There is no need to install it and, if you do, the game will not run.

I cannot guarantee that what follows is correct, but I think, for a DBW 1.7.1 install, you will need to install the latest Carrier Mod and CarrierTakeOff5.7.2.1 in your \#DBW directory to make the angle-deck carrier catapults work. I have 'adjusted' the names of these directories as given below to insure that they are the first and second directories in my \#DBW directory:

__0000_CarrierMod
_00000_000_CarrierTakeoff5.7.2.1

This is my best guess, since I can't find it explicitly stated anywhere as I have done here. If anyone knows whether or not this is right, I would like to hear from you.

Note that there is now a Version 2.01 of the angle-deck Essex Carriers available. I recommend that you give them a try.

Because of a R/L situation, I think my first opportunity to try out Version 2.01 may be as long as 4-weeks away. So until then, the angle-decks are dead in the water for me. However, if you try what I have mentioned above and find the angle-deck catapults work, let me know.

Cheers,

set the mission date to sometime after 1956
this will increase catapult power.

mojojojo,

Good point. However, the problem I have had with the angle-deck carriers is that the catapults just don't work at all. I re-read crazyeddie's post and it is unclear to me whether he has the same problem or that his catapults work, but don't provide enough push to successfully launch an F4.

Mojojojo, assuming the catapults on your angle-deck carriers work and you are using DBW 1.7.1, do you have Carrier Mod and CarrierTakeOff5.7.2.1 installed in your \#DBW directory?

My catapults work, or appear to, up to a point.  The F4 jumps to the starting position on the cat, they take off but far too slowly and crash into the sea. I can get the F4 to fly off The Colossus class no problem at all, that class works fine, its the Essex and The Clemenceau class that wont work.

I have tried changing the mis dates, I have tried just about every combination of mods install that I can think, different sequences, changing the names to get them to load in the order suggested.  I have tried adding things to my config ini as Mods, catapult boost, power boost, you name I have tried it.

I have DBW 1.7.1 and I have tried it with and without the SAS Hotkey mod, The Carrier Mod, I have tried every Mod I can think of, and I have been at it for nearly four weeks, nothing works. I even changed to DBW from 4.101 just to get the F4 working.

The only thing I have not tried is the latest version of the ship, I was up to speed on that because I was doing the decks for Western as he did the model work but perhaps something new is in there, It's worth a try.

I WILL get this to work, or die screaming at my computer in the attempt ...

Thanks for your replies chaps, every little helps.

Nope, tried that, can't even get the Essex class ships to show up in game with this version, but the Clem and Foch do, but same problem, they jump to the cat, afterburners on and just roll off the deck into the oggin, every time.

I've been reading about this most of the day and trying different things and I agree with CrazyEddie (who doesn't appear to be that crazy  ;)  ) it is almost impossible to understand the install procedures.  However, I don't even get as far as the cataplults.  I know I've read about my issue before, but just can't seem to find the thread in the forums.  The carriers show up on my FMB mission (Essex, Clemenceau, et al), but as soon as the mission begins, my jets explodes into little tiny fragments.  What is my problem?  (No!  A psychaitrist can not fix my type of problem   :o  ).

DBW1.71 is what I'm concerned with.  Thanks.

please create a separate thread for this. more people will see it. make sure you select the "target" as the carrier for any takeoff or landing waypoints.

Crazyeddie,

You are at least further on than I am. Your angle-deck carrier catapults work. Mine don't. I had hoped that Version 2.01 was the answer, but it seems it has not helped you.

Are you using the following mods in the order given below and if so, have you positioned them as the first directories in your \#DBW directory?

__0000_CarrierMod
_00000_000_CarrierTakeoff5.7.2.1

Erase "_0000_CarrierMod" folder.
This is very old version (but Jetwar pack 1.1 or without any Jetwar pack, Temp13 is latest).

For DBW1.71 or Jetwar pack 1.2, "00000_SAS_AI_Engine_HotKeys_Carriers" (v2.5) folder is the only catapult MOD folder.

Therein lies another problem then Western.

Sadly as soon as I install  "00000_SAS_AI_Engine_HotKeys_Carriers" (v2.5)" and click on the exe file to run the game it will not start, it just goes back to the exe file on my desktop.  I tried installing the file using the jsgmemods facility and whilst the install that way allows me to start the game I still get the same result, slow take off into the sea every time.  I do have the latest exe, so it's not that either.

So I don't think that is the answer.

Mojojojo - I think RedSpade is saying something different to what you imagine, for the aircraft to explode into tiny pieces they are usually already on the deck, so he must have the waypoints set up correctly, otherwise they would be up in the sky somewhere. I think his post is appropriate to this thread.

One thing not to forget : you must "attach" your plane to the carrier for both TakeOff and Landing waypoints. If not, it will explode...

I had the problem the first time I tried the F-4 v 1.2 on carriers... but after attaching teh WP, no problem... works perfectly (I did not try all the carriers, of course...).
