I've been studying WWII for 40 years and have accumulated a library of several hundred books, yet I did not know about this mission. I think that should God grant me another 40 years to study this amazing conflict, I'll still be learning new things about it.

Fascinating story, Milantarik. It is interesting to think what would have happened if the Palace revolt had been successful- the US would never believe another word the Japanese said, and would have had to launch operation Downfall- the land invasion of the Japanese home islands (shudder) "Casualty predictions varied widely but were extremely high for both sides: depending on the degree to which Japanese civilians resisted the invasion, estimates ran into the millions for Allied casualties[1] and several times that number for Japanese casualties."

Thankfully, that never happened. Its amazing that such massive historical events can turn on the smallest things.......

Thanks mate, interestingly the war begun with a japanese attack before an official war declaration and ended with an american attack after the official japanese rendition.

Yeah, I read "The Last Mission" a couple of years ago.  very good book.  Highly recommended.  I almost always read books about Fighter Combat, but this "bomber" book had me hooked.
