DCS: P-51D Mustang Coming in 2012
« on: January 28, 2012, 03:11:08 PM »

The Fighter Collection and Eagle Dynamics will release their next Digital Combat Simulator (DCS) aircraft in 2012: the legendary P-51D Mustang. The Mustang was among the best and most well-known fighters used by the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. Possessing excellent range and manoeuvrability, the P-51 operated primarily as a long-range escort fighter and also as a ground attack fighter-bomber with bombs, rockets, and machine guns. The Mustang served in nearly every combat zone during WWII, and later fought in the Korean War.

The DCS:  P-51D Mustang will be modelled at the same exacting detail as the existing Ka-50 Black Shark and A-10C Warthog Digital Combat Simulation (DCS) aircraft and it will be online compatible with them.  Based on many years of restoring, flying and maintaining Mustangs, The Fighter Collection brings its unique ability to portray this aircraft in its full glory.

The P-51D will be the first aircraft in the Flying Legends series that focuses on historical aircraft that have set benchmarks in combat aviation. This series of simulations demonstrates the broad scope of DCS simulation environment and its ability to introduce aircraft from all eras into a common simulation environment.  While the P-51D started as an internal technology demonstration, it has evolved into an independent product that adds an all new dimension to the DCS universe.  The development of the P-51D and other Flying Legends series aircraft definitely does not preclude the continued development of modern aircraft.

More details of DCS: P-51D Mustang will be made available closer to product release later this year.

DCS: P-51D Mustang FAQ

GENERAL

Q: What are the system requirements?
A: At present it is too early to say. System requirements will be finalized when we get closer to release.

Q: Will DCS: P-51D Mustang be online-compatible with other DCS products?
A: Yes, owners of the Mustang will be able to fly online alongside owners of DCS Black Shark and DCS A-10C Warthog, assuming the mission selected for the server is made to accommodate this.

Q: What about future DCS jets?
A: We will continue to develop modern aircraft as well.

Q: When will the P-51 be released?
A: During 2012.

Q: Will a world war 2 era map be included?
A: No, DCS is an open simulation environment, it is not a simulation of a specific time period.

Q: Will units from the world war 2 era exist, like ME-109's and Ju-87's?
A: That has yet to be determined. While we understand the desire for WW2 counterpart aircraft, DCS is not intended to be a full WW2 era simulation.

Q: What about feature X?
A: A more detailed feature list will be made available later, as the product gets closer to release.

Q: Are there any screenshots released?
A: Yes, you can find some screenshots in the announcement.

Q: Why was the P-51 selected?
A: The P-51 began as a side project by some of the staff and showed good progress. Rather than put that effort to waste, we decided to flesh it out and release as a new aircraft for DCS.

Q: How is the P-51 supposed to fit into DCS? This makes no sense to me.
A: DCS is an open simulation environment, not confined to any one era, level of fidelity, or 1st party development. In the future 1st and 3rd parties may add all sorts of different units ranging from gliders to X-51s.

Q: How is a P-51 supposed to fight in a modern Georgian war against modern aircraft and air defense systems?
A: It simply does not need to. It is up to the mission designer to put what units he or she wishes into the mission.

Q: How much will it cost?
A: Pricing has yet to be determined.

TECHNICAL

Q: Will DCS: P-51D Mustang use all cores on my CPU?
A: Not fully. It does include the new sound engine which operates in a separate thread.

Q: Will there be a 64-bit version?
A: Yes. We highly recommend using 64-bit operating systems with this product.

GAMEPLAY

Q: Is the K-14A gunsight modeled?
A: Yes.

Q: Will there be missions and a campaign included?
A: There will be training missions, an undetermined number of single missions, and a Challenge Campaign with tasks of ever increasing difficulty.

Q: What weapons will be available for the P-51?
A: The DCS P-51D will be armed with 6 .50 cal. machine guns, 5 in. HVAR unguided rockets, and 500 lbs general purpose bombs. The guns will fire armor-piercing (AP) and armor-piercing incendiary tracer (APIT) rounds. In addition, two 75 gal. drop tanks will be available.

Q: Will we be able to adjust gun settings, such as ammo and convergence range?
A: The DCS P-51D guns are boresighted by default according to standard USAAF guidelines for the Mustang, but adjustment will be possible through a combination of the payload editor and the LUA configuration files.

Q: Does the DCS P-51D include any modern avionics?
A: The only modernized element of the DCS P-51D will be the pilot 3D model, which is based on a contemporary pilot's flight suit and head gear.

CWMV---yes you certainly have made a monstrous impact across the strata of our social fabric...perhaps you should now run for president :D

Everyone---help me out. Is it just me, or do alot of people like to have strong reactions re: the 'stang? I mean, I've always seen it as just another plane, with its strengths and weaknesses. I dont have any "strong" feelings about the plane either way. Its not the best, but its not bad---Its kinda fun, then I go on to another plane...I guess what I'm asking is, "how did the Mustang get singled out as an object of abuse?

Is this too strong?...ok, how did it get to be the brunt of alot of jokes? I'm a newbee, so help me out. Did I miss something, say, two years ago maybe? ...thanks...

No I try to be an honest man, Id never make it.

Its a simple case of the legend not being the reality of this aircraft.
It does illicit a stronger response than most here in the US. Most of us grew up with tales about how the P-51 was the top/best/zenith of ww2 fighter development...and if you even bring up the 262 your not being a patriot!  :D
Then in a place like this you see it from the eyes of those who didn't hear the same legends, and see it as a big gas tank with 4-6 .50's strapped to it.

I think the English have the same sort of mentality with the Spitfire. If you were to believe film and books the spitfire single-handedly defeated the Reich in the west...never you mind the hurricane that bore the brunt of the battle and came out on top.

All our nations have their aircraft that are enshrined in legend, and no one likes to see them in their true light when the legend isn't quite the reality.
'Cause none of them are the damn 262, so they are all second best!  :D

Then we eventually found out the truth. Fact is the Germans had the best planes. But they lost for lack of numbers, spreading themselves too thin, and some poor strategy decisions. The truth of Germany having the best planes in the WW2 era comes out in IL-2.

I'm sure some will disagree with content or degree. But I believe there is a consensus behind this.

I am glad DCS is releasing the Mustang in this series. They are expanding their content and adding variety. This should work good.

Yes, but the truth always seems to be somewhere between a pissing contest and a popularity contest. Our personal preferences, sentiments and tastes are often irrational, senseless, dangerous and mean. But I have a powerful weapon in IL-2 where I believe the FMs are based mostly on factual data. And I have something even more profound than "objective opinion" (...if there is such a thing), I can get the "feel" of the plane. So the Mustang in my mind doesnt "have to" be the best, she only needs to be her true representation in all the variety of IL-2.

This is something that I think Eagle Dynamics is wise to recognize. IL-2 mods have been able to stretch from 1916 to 1956 and beyond to Viet Nam without becoming over-drawn. This is amazing, I think. And jets are fun in their own right. But with the variety and intimacy of WW2 combat, this unique historical era can make jets get boring fast. Sure, where else can you fly the F-15, but where else can you go directly from WW1 bis to a Dornier 335 to a F9F to a Yak, to a Mustang? Theres enough here to keep me busy for a lifetime.

So Eagle Dynamics has a unique challenge of kinda expanding backwards from post Viet Nam to WW2. Not entirely enviable, but with the further packages should bring success, somewhat in the same way IL-2 is expanding backwards and forwards at the same time---from 1916 to the early jets. And where else will you find that all in one package?

So, congradulations to Eagle Dynamics, the Mustang will bode you well.

And to all the sinning and non-sinning simmers I say, "mod-on!".

Bold statement but...I disagree in part.
The Germans did not have the best planes of WW2 but they had some of the best but not the best over all others. Some aircraft were terrible or had many problems ie. He177. (The allies too had troubled aircraft)  I do agree that generally what done them in was the lack of numbers, spreading themselves too thin, strategy etc. line. (including introduction of new aircraft)  The Allied nations, Japan etc. had some of the best aircraft too - fact, and in some cases better than similar Luftwaffe aircraft. Example Mosquito. Also depending on the time in the war matters too. Bf 109 G is handicapped with gun packs and general performance vs USAAF esort fighters. The Mustang is one of the best aircraft of WW2 but it isn't the best, the Spitfire, Fw 190 one can say the same. The best of WW2 aircraft varies: certainately the Fw190 series, The Spitfire, P-47 Thunderbolt, F6F Hellcat, Hawker Tempest, Zero (up to 1943), Bf 109 (depending on model), Yak 3, Re 2005 etc. etc. There are so many one can name Allied and Axis. Opinions vary much. Same for bombers etc. ie. Lancaster, B-17, Ju 88, Il-2, Ki-67,  etc. etc.  Now, Il-2 is great and we love it but it's not perfect. As for DCS interesting.
Cheers  :)
