More detailed skins
« on: January 19, 2012, 05:43:03 AM »

Some people at axis-and-allies-paintworks are thinking big ! One can actually read the stencils.  :o Very impressive.

Holy shizzle- that is incredible. If that is workable, its going to transform the game (again)

New graphics card, anyone?

Cliffs of what, you say?

Not all that new, 2048 x 2048 textures

Avala had a private Beta of 2048 x 2048 Map textures back in October that was tested a bit and worked out good,
even tested 4096 x 4096 textures although they did not seem much different than the 2048 x 2048 textures

Here is some pics of Avala's 2048 x 2048 map textures testing

IL-2 is sarting to look better and better ,all the time
maps, skins, objects in larger texture sizes is quite interesting

Will be watching for these Skins from axis-and-allies in 2048 x 2048  ;D

Looks great! It's amazing to see how this old game can be improved constantly. It would be double awesome if we could also introduce new global graphic effects.

These screen shots look as good, if not better, than 'CloD'. The scenery looks much more realistic- Clod is waaaay to bright and colourful.

Bring it on, is what I say!

It doesn't look to me a "huge improvement". CloD uses also 2048x2048 skins and its nothing drastically improved over IL2 which is a >10 years old game.
Anyway if someone could work-out the 3d engine THIS woul be a huge improvement, but textures hardly...

Even World of tanks uses 2048x2048 or 2048x1024 depending on the tanks size. So to have this improvement as standard for IL-2 is quite good IMO. If there was a way to implement basic bump or height maps on skins this would be awesome and great detail could be achieved. Surely they must be possible to some degree or another because maps use them in-game already! 3d engine improvements would be welcome and high poly models of planes, vehicles etc. Much is still possible I believe!

BumpH files on skins, that sounds interesting

The map textures above shown, only the BumpH files are 2048 x 2048
the actual textures used were 512 x 512 or 1024 x 1024

I've tried creating BumpH files for cockpit .tga's but ingame it didn't work. Noticed no difference.
Don't know why BumpH files work on map textures and not on other ones, that's beyond my knowledge.
But would be nice to see shadows shifting when you turn your plane.

I don't want to get me wrong guys, its useful but not "THE" thing that would make the huge difference. Looks like its more of a usage for the trees and the other ground objects...

... a 2048x2048 skin is 4 times bigger than a 1024x1024 , am I wrong ...??

So if you have, say, between 20 and 40+ AC in a mission with 2048x2048 skins the question is, will your GC cope with it ...??  ::)
