[...]as long as the Game is on my Hard drive, it effectively IS home.
I reckon your desktop is overflowing with shortcuts & files isn't it!
and on c:/Il2 , it is at the ROOT of home, and rules everything else
What version of IL-2 did you install!?
not hidden away into some generic program files folder
You've got more than one Program Files (x86) folder!?
or some such shafty subdirectory hidden away in the dark corners of the hierarchy.
If you've got dark corners on your hard disk then I think it might be time for an upgrade ;)
Il-2 up front... everyone else step back!
Yeah! take that C:\Windows !!! :P

W7 64bit Home Premium for me. Game is in ~ C:\Program Files (x86)\IL-2 Sturmovik - 1946 (Its UP3/DBW1.6). No problems. No need to modify the UAC either. ;)

Windows 7 website = LIES. The only problem I have so far is perfect mode not working... I'm getting help on that though.  :-\

- right... a lot of action on the desktop.
- 4.101 UP DBW, no extras
- no no, but "program files" can stand for other, standard programs. IL2, as a piece of software surely is neither generic nor standard. Its awesome.
- do not think so...
- :D my feelings exactly!

I found the problem, and it's not Windows 7.  :)

Well, I did the deed and switched to Win 7 x64. I switched three days ago and yesterday had a fault, PAGE_FAULT_IN_A_UNPAGED_AREA BSOD. I tried evrything I could find on the internet forums to correct it but no joy. Finally mid-morning today I just reformatted my drive and reloaded from scratch. Not a great beginning. I just finished loading all my stuff and finally played SAS 4.09 and DBW1.7 to verify they work. Both do but it seems to me that XP ran these faster. I think there's too many "neccessary" processes running in the background. I tried to shut down as many as I though I could and still had 34 running in the background. With XP, I could get it down to 19. I even upgraded my video card from a GTX 285 to a GTX560 with 2GB DDR5 memory and it still ran slower to me than my 285. That's the way it goes with this hardware and software stuff!

DBW 1.7? I found the complete opposite, W7 runs much faster the XP. my page file use normally:

Page File: 1061MB used, 7125MB available

Maybe change your startup programs in your msconfig (start - search - type 'msconfig') to limit what programs fire up on startup.

Yeah, 1.7, I meant of course 1.6 but eagerly awaiting 1.7. Yes, I did that already, i.e. msconfig and shut down as many un-neccessary processes as I could. As a test, I run a QMB using Redko's Kyushu map, with poor weather and Clouds Big mod, with three groups of P51D and three Ki84 and it runs more choppy than it did on XP with my 285. I guessd I need to dial back some of my settings in the NVDIA control panel. Still all in all, I'm glad it runs.
