Win 7 x64 compatability with IL2 1946?
« on: December 28, 2011, 12:55:36 AM »

I am in the process of upgrading to a new computer and I discovered Win 7 x64 is not compatable with IL2 1946. However, I think many here do run IL2 on this OS. Is this true or is there a work around for getting IL2 to run in a x64 environment?

I am running win 7 x64 and running IL-2 1946 fine. I don't know where you got that information though. But if you have problem, maybe I can help.

I got the info on Microsoft's Win 7 web site. I don't have a problem yet but wanted to find out before I made the switch. I have DBW modded up and I want to be able to continue playing it after I make the switch.

I got the info on Microsoft's Win 7 web site.
IL-2 1946 is tagged "incompatible" by MS since it won't run when being installed into it's default location in a subfolder of the "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)" tree.
That much MS is right when saying it's "incompatible" since IL-2 1946 simply isn't aware of stuff like UAC and the like.

Anyway the simple way to deal with this is to install IL-2 to somewhere outside the "Program Files" tree, e.g. create a new folder "C:\IL2" and install it there. That way it will run without any glitches on Win 7 64 Bit. (The other possibility would be to completely disable UAC, but that's not recommended).

Best regards - Mike

I play IL-2 1946 - Stock4.10.1m, +SASModAct3.0.6, HSFX5.0.1, Ultr@Pack3.0RC4, DarkBlueWorld1.6 - all IL-2 1946 work well on Windows 7 x64.

At applications or game softs, "x64" causing problems are nothing.

When "x64" causing problems exist, those are "device driver" problem.
"device driver" is depending Windows version or x64?/x86? which.
So, when your Joystick is too old and Joystick maker doesn't release Win7 x64 driver, you can't use that Joystick on Win7 x64.
In example, old Microsoft Sidewinder joysticks of "Gameport version" don't work on Windows7 (both x86/x64).
Nowadays joysticks from Saitek(X52 or Cyborg) or Logitech(G940) are OK on Win7 x64.

One more...
When your IL-2 1946 is DVD-ROM version, DVD-ROM copy protect old "SecuRom" version is sometimes incompatible for Win7. (probably x86/x64 both)
Then you have to install latest compatible version's "SecuRom".

I installed Windows 7/64 about 3 days ago ... UP-2.01 + UP-3.0/RC4 & SAS-Modact are all running fine.

If it helps all I did was create a folder on my C-Drive called it "Games" & copy / pasted each IL-2 game version folder that I'd backed up onto an external hard-drive into the newly created "Games" folder, then pinned shortcuts from the exe files for each of the 3 versions to my start menu .... done.

Works just fine ... only thing different is that I'm now running Windows 7  ;)

7 ultimate X64... never had trouble running the program, be that in "program files" or "program files (X86)" or anywhere else.

Thanks for the info Guys! I have IL2 loaded on a different drive from my OS. Looks like I should have no problem with my upgrade.

No problems running modded steam version of '46 on Win7 x64 here. Game lives in Program Files (x86) folder quite happily!

You just gotta make sure you set your file/folder permissions on the install directory otherwise you'll have virtualisation issues!

make sure you set your file/folder permissions on the install directory
Besides installation into a different directory than "Program Files" (easiest) and completely disabling UAC (not recommended) this is option No. 3, with the benefit of keeping the folder structures consistent, but the drawback of being quite difficult for Joe User who never touched files/folder permissions before.
To each his own, in the end it's up to the user himself which of those methods sounds most convenient to him.

To be fair - the 'block' rule in file/folder permissions under Program Files was only prevalent in Vista. MS realised they dropped the ball on that one hence Win7 was a lot easier to install & fiddle with games on :)

Sure IL-2 is easy to install into another folder outside of the Program Files folder and you won't have any virtualisation issues, but you'll still feel like IL-2 has been kicked out of home and has to beg on the streets of your C-drive :)

Turning off UAC is the #1 reason why folks with win7 get infected with viruses :)

depends...
as long as the Game is on my Hard drive, it effectively IS home.
and on c:/Il2 , it is at the ROOT of home, and rules everything else, not hidden away into some generic program files folder or some such shafty subdirectory hidden away in the dark corners of the hierarchy.
Il-2 up front... everyone else step back!
