Saw it live.

Today, polish "LOT" airliner B 767 - no gear down.  :(

But, we know how to fly:

Perfect emergency landing.

F-16 as an assist.

They did a very good job on that.  About as close to perfect as you can get.

Tough day at the "office" for those guys...

Must have been exciting to watch it live

Considering the gear failed, that was textbook even if it did have gear - seemingly less than 1m per second as he eased it down - give him a bonus - Boeing can pay it for him & repairs, & for advertising their inproved safety (remembering that in the 90's, Boeing had a lot; punn intended Muhuhaha, of rudder 'jack' faliures)... credit to the crash services too.

i sure hope they got some PROPER applause for that!
the engine nacelles and the rear section of the fuselage took it all... a classic 3 point landing.
wow. top work.

but who is to blame for the gear not coming down? That person will not sleep well tonight...

Thought landing gear was supposed to work even in the event of a hydraulics failure no?

Top class emergency landing there, pilot should be very pleased with that.

He flew around for an hour dumping fuel and landed on fumes, also they sprayed the runway with a fire retardent making it greasy, with these factors taken into account it really was something special, those guys deserve a medal and a clean pair of shorts!

There is a Polish saying, back from WWII AFAIK: "The Polish can even fly the barn's door". Perfect landing, the plane's structure was almost untouched. Bad luck is that it stopped in the middle of runways' crossing (Okecie has 2, crossed runways) making whole Airport closed till 0800h tomorrow.... :P

To bad I didn't seee this live. I had at least opportunity to see F-16 live :P I was playing SupCom when I heard a thunder above. Went outside and saw a pair of fighters flying by. In addition to that they were afterburning in irregular formation. I was like "WTF?!". Turned TV on... BINGO! "Airspace over Warsaw closed due to gear malfunction in 767 airliner" 0_o

It ranks right up there with the US Airways Flight 1549 landing in the Hudson River (although the LOT pilots had more time to prepare) in "miracle" landings.

Also, you'll notice that the fire trucks were right on top of the plane once it landed and did a good job of hosing down the area. First, they hit the engines in order to cool them and to knock out any flames. They they started misting the area to reduce the risk of fuel vapor exploding.

Meanwhile, someone inside the plane was doing a good job of getting the passengers out in good order.

I hope that all concerned get the recognition they deserve.

Hats off to the crew (pilots and firemen who prepared the runway) for one of the best landings I have seen ! very smooth and soft, under such circumstances !
