Crimea Mud retextured (WIP)
« on: October 27, 2011, 01:58:15 PM »

Some screenshots of my work in progress of the Crimea Mud map. In my opinion the version we have in DBW can have a make over.
I will do my best to give this old lady a facelift to make her look more atractive.  ;D
I use Cyberolas' retextured version of the default Crimea as a starting point:
http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,16373.msg176040.html#msg176040

Except for his city textures I will retexture it complety with a new set of textures.
Later on I will create new autumn woods and trees and will also add small Russian villages etc to his actors.static.
But first priority is the texture combination.

New autumn trees will also be a great addition ... it's often small seeming elements like these that can be a great help in making maps look good.

Thats a very nice blend of textures there giving it a very natural organic look, i like the way the towns blend into the countryside.......hang on! i recognise that horse.....yep it's definately the one i put my money on last weekend, can somebody please shoot it!

Are you using gimp to create the bump textures/tiles? if so then i have a question maybe you can help me with.....in gimp when you click on filters there is a drop down menu, from here i make my textures seamless but there is also a 'bump' option....using this are the results in anyway different from actually creating a bump texture/tile?

Yes, I use GIMP for making textures seamless and for bump mapping. And for some textures I apply the embossing option (the 'bump' option as you call it) in combination with bump mapping.
But there is a difference in bump mapping and embossing. They seem to have the same effect on textures for creating depth but in game you will notice that embossed textures always have the shadowed parts at the same side no matter what time of day it is. Bump mapped textures looks different in the early morning than in late afternoon, shadows come from the other side and when sun is closer to the horizon shadows become larger. Just like in real life.

Found out that the embossing option can be useful for skins so the surface of a plane looks irregular, a bit bumpy. Or I use it sometimes for certain cockpit textures.

By the way, I added the autumn woods you created for your Blumax Online 8 Islands to my Crimea Mud map. Colours of the woods matches with the landscape but to suggest denser woods I added a lot more trees to it.  ;)

Thanks for clarifying that for me, i do use both methods but had never known where the difference was, just knowing that small detail will help me alot in deciding what to use from now on.

I hope that autumn wood texture doesn't give you as much trouble as it gave me for Online 8.......do you remember? ;D

It is... The pine tree for instance doesn't fit very well in the jungle or the bright green foliage trees are out of place in desert areas.

A screenshot of the autumn trees I made for this map:

That template for a Russian village looks like a little masterpiece. Very realistic given the limited possibilities that Il-2 provides as a game. And in any case light years beyond anything in the standard game maps ...

It's great to have someone able to conceptualize something completely different and more realistic like this ... looking very much forward to this ....
