Something I dug out from the past
« on: October 24, 2011, 04:07:26 AM »

Hi guys!

I used to be a very active modeller both on plastic and wood up until the birth of my daughter in 2000 when all the chemicals and sharp tools had to be withdrawn from the apartment and stored down in the basement store room. The same happened to the last of my models that were taking up valuable space on the shelves so in the boxes they went.

Last week I received an email from the IPMS (International Plastic Modellers Society) Hellas that this year they were celebrating their 30th anniversary. On the annual competition they were inviting all modellers and models that have won "best of show" awards during those years. I have won one of those in the year 2000 by a project that I regard as the pinnacle of my modelling efforts due to the fact that it is not kit based but scratch built from plastic and balsa. It is a model of the DeHavilland 88 Comet racer "Grosvernor House", winner of the 1934 McRobertson race from England to Australia, DH's first "Wooden Wonder". I have seen this actual plane at Old Warden and had the chance to photograph it from close quarters so I had plenty of info and scale drawings.
So into the store room I went and dug out the box. Thankfully it was intact but had acquired some dust. Not having much time I just took it to the show where they were happy to see the model and myself again after many years. The IPMS guys took a picture of it for registration and I had the chance to take some myself afterwards. Unfortunately the dust shows and the model is in need of some TLC. Perhaps I'll find some time to do it, also for the other models I have stored down there but for now it is in the box again.

You can see all models of the show here:

I'm on page 15.

Thanks guys! There's more on the shelf where this came from, military subjects too. When I clean up the place they will emerge and properly photographed. Stay tuned!

Thanks cannonuk! Well I have to say that when I look at it I don't believe that 12 years ago I had the time and patience to actually make this from scratch. There is no way I can do this now, after retirement maybe (if such a term exists in Europe by then) and if my hand is not shakey...

Thanks guys!

Well, I promised you there would be more from that store room. The IPMS guys asked me if I could find an old C-47 I maee in past in Hellenic Air Force VIP colours to show in a reception taking place next Monday for the celebration of 100 years from the establishment of air power in Greece. So I dug this one out. This is a Monogram kit in 1:48 but with a lot of additional work. Judging by the serial it must have been an ex-RAF plane taken over after WWII. It was operated until well into the 90s. Here's a few pics I took yesterday before packaging her:

I've opened the escape hatch to let some light into the cockpit as all switches and levers are modelled in there. This is one of my favourites. I like how smart she looks in the white and silver, plus this is by default a really beautiful aeroplane.

Thank you for the very nice words guys!

I went to the HAF 100 year celebration yesterday and took some shots of other hellenic historical beauties modeled by some expert modelers, some of them good friends of mine. I though you would like them:

Sopwith Pup and Strutter:

DH9:

Desert Hurricane MkIIc:

Spitfire MkIX under maintenance:

F-104G:

TA-7H:

C-47 VIP (OK, you've seen that one before...)
