GTX 550 Ti 1G vs 9600 GT
« on: October 24, 2011, 12:51:53 AM »

So far I bought a new graphic card, GTX 550 Ti 1G which replaced old one, ATI HD4850 512MB.
I expected much frame rate improvement, but there was only a few frame rates improvement, not significant one.
I have 2 PCs which are identical in its specification (CPU, mainboard, RAM,….). One is with GTX 550 Ti 1G, and another is with Geforce 9600GT.
I tested with same conf.ini and 3D set-up in Nvidia control panel.
I checked each frame rates with internal FPS counter in IL2 FB 1946 (Shift+Tab keys, then ‘fps START SHOW’).

Surprisingly both ones showed almost same results.
Someone says there will be less improvement if the game is an old game.
I guess this might be the case since the graphic engine of IL2 FB 1946 is old one.
Honestly I bit disappointed with that result.
I regret that I should have bought 9600GT card instead of GTX 550 Ti.

You need to use NvidiaInspector, more advanced then Nvidia control panel.
Do you have vertical sync on in your setting?

This will limit your FPS to your refresh screen 60Hz

I have 60 fps almost all the time with the GTX 550 Ti and this with VSync enabled (mandatory with FSX....) in my 26,5" flat screen even though I have to admit, it was not that bad with my old 9800 GT....

Disable Vertical Sync and try.
There are less stutter but some glitch when you turn your head.

Passmark tells the GTX 550 Ti performs twice as fast as the 9600 GT, see here:
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html
GTX 550 Ti Rank 48, Score 1882
9600 GT Rank 118, Score 929

I'm running a GTX 550 Ti on a Core i5 2500K myself, which cracks the 60FPS mark easily even online with 60+ players in heavy furballs on a Full HD 24'' display.
On the other hand, I remember from the past when upgrading an old P4 system from a crappy Geforce 6200 to the fastest available ATI card that this had nearly no effect as well, which turned out to be caused by the CPU being the bottleneck.

Bottom line: What's your full system specs? Maybe the 9600 GT was already fast enough to hit the ceiling of your system elsewhere, e.g. on the CPU.

Best regards - Mike

Thank you all for your replies.!   That's the Vsync. I never thought of the Vsync could cause that.
As OberstDanjeje said, Vsync took the role of a frame rates limiter in this case. That's why I got same FPS on both PCs with different graphic card.
Once I turn off Vsync, frame rates went much more higher than 9600Gt did. Great thanks OberstDanjeje !

My system's spec is somewhat old one's:

 Intel Core2 Duo E8400 @3GHz + P5K/EPU mainboard + 2 GB ram + GTX550 Ti 1G under Windoes XP SP3.

Anyways, now I don't regret that I bought GTX550 Ti.  ;D
I enjoy flying IL2 1946 with 16Q CSAA @1280X960.

Best regards!!

Thats probably whats wrong for him, my 9800GT recently died so i got a EVGA 550 ti and barely noticed any difference in anything probably because of my 2.2ghz core 2 duo and if he plays anything newer he`ll be glad he got the 550 ti

If someone think to buy today's GeForce video card,
don't choose GTX550Ti or GTX560.

Today's GeForce video cards are separable into 2 groups:

1:Good group - GTX590/580/570/560Ti
Low voltage run, well fps to its eating power watts, low heating, low noise

2:Bad group - GTX560/550Ti
High voltage run, bad fps to its eating much power watts, heating hot, noisy

I bought a GTX550Ti from Zotac not too long ago. I am actually quite happy with it. I can run all my Games on maximum Settings. Surprisingly, it is very quiet, in fact, the Fan always stays on the lowest Level. However, I usually increase the Fan Speed manually to 44%. It is still quiet then and reaches 59°C after a few hours of gaming. (In this Case, Skyrim)

Considering that a GTX560Ti costs double the amount of money (at least in Germany), I think the 550Ti is quite a good value. It does make weird rattling sounds when under load though. I am not sure if this is normal, but I guess I only notice this because I don't have an enclosure for it. It does not disturb me, so i don't really care.
