WIP - HMS Nelson BB
« on: October 09, 2011, 10:51:49 AM »

Another one for the MTO. These were the most heavily armed battleships in the Royal Navy, the main armament consisting of 9 x 16in guns in triple turrets, with 12 x 6in secondary guns.

Nelson and her sister ship Rodney served in the Atlantic and Mediterranean both spending time with Force H based at Gibraltar. They were both involved in Operation Pedestal to bring critical supplies to Malta. Rodney with KGV was one of the two battleships which eventually caught and destroyed the Bismark after her steering was disabled by torpedoes from Ark Royals Swordfish aircraft.

That was one of my first "major" plastic models (I think 'Airfix") 1000 years ago! It's most welcome! 8)

Ashe... This is a very big and most welcomed surprise! The Nelson Class are my favourite British Battleships!

Also known as either the "Cherry Tree" Class, because they were intended to be heavier but the design was cut down by Washington (ie Washington Naval Treaty limiting tonnage of battleships, 6 February 1922) or the Rodnol and Nelsol as they resembled oil tankers  and there was a class of RN Oilers at the time that had names that all ended in "ol".
In HMS Nelson the three turrets from forward to aft were "A", "B" and "X" and the guns received individual nicknames being known as Happy, Grumpy, Sneezy, Dopey, Sleepy, Bashful, Doc, Mickey and Minnie,

Great choice Ashe as these are iconic RN Warships  ;)

Thanks,

G

Thanks for the comments. -- Of course I still have HMS Eagle to complete but this will be getting progressed at the same time. I had thought about starting HMS Nelson some time ago but its taken a while to find some decent drawings. The other problem was the apparent difficulty of simulating the two firing arcs of X turret. Thanks to Western for solving that with the discovery of the NoFireMinYaw // NoFireMaxYaw functions.

a very good choice Ashe, now the Royal Navy needs only Repulse, Hood, a Revenge-class boat and Barham for filling her big-guns Order of Battle ;)
Poor Duilio, she is desperately calling for a help: Littorio, where the h...l are you?  :'(

my regards

Littorio Class is not so far advanced --- and work on her has stalled for the moment.

And over here we have a little progress in converting the Caio Dulio into Conte di Cavour.
New secondary turrets are modelled and the main director changed, but I'm not happy with the bridge structure yet. Also needs some minor changes to the rear of the superstructure.

I have no intentions to model Hood or Repulse at present, but two conversions of the Warspite model to Valiant/Queen Elizabeth and Barham/Malaya are possibles. Revenge Class are also nice subjects but nothing started yet.
