Need a new graphic card, GTX590 or GTX580?
« on: October 05, 2011, 03:27:27 AM »

My old Nvidia 9800GX2 (2 GPU) is almost dead. (I have many blue screen that lead to a nv4_disp.dll error)
I'm thinking about buying an GTX590 but with my 9800GX2 I never had the opportunity to use the SLI configuration.
I tried different setting with Nvidia inspector but the FPS is lower with SLI than with a single card.
I have read many time here that other people have incresed FPS with SLI enabled so I don't know if it's better buy the GTX590 or the GTX580 since the GPU is more powerful then the single GTX590 GPU.

So I need youe help ;)

Hi!
IMHO the best choice is always an -80series GTX...and possibly a 480GTX. Take a look at Zotac site.

Cheers

For the price of the GTX 590 or 580 you can purchase 2 GTX460's and have better performance in SLI than one of the other cards alone.

That being said, if money is no object, go for SLI with the GTX 580's.  The 590's still have some bugs to work out. (probably in the next 3-6 mos.)

S!

I haven't a SLI card ystem...I'm happy yet with my 280GTX AMP. I've read around (I think on SimQ site) time ago that SLI solutions could give probs with IL2...

Guys thanks for your tips.
So you have more FPS with SLI?

I run IL2 either with a single Gigabyte 460GTX 1gb or two in SLI. Not a great difference in FPS - this can sometimes be the only way of telling the difference with modern cards as they tend to run IL2 very easily. I don't suffer as many slowdowns or stutters over large cities in either setup so I'm afraid I can't confirm one way or another which setup is best.

When I run the game in SLI I have to run it using SFR (Split Frame Rendering) as I get micro pauses/stutters if I use AFR (Alternate Frame Rendering). However, SFR isn't available to select for the game profile in the Nvidia Control Panel so I select via 'Nvidia Inspector'. It's easy to set up.

Maybe I solved the issue with my 9800GX2 with the beta driver 285.38.
Anyway I have some little loss in FPS using both AFR or SFR.
So if I need to buy a new one I will buy the GTX580.

Sid, could you tell me which are you setting with SLI?

Thanks

I use SFR. Because this setting isn't available in the Nvidia Control Panel I downloaded a programme called 'Nvidia Inspector' and use the profile page in that programme to set IL2 profile to SFR. Once I have done this, in the Nvidia Control Panel the SLI setting in the IL2 profile appears as 'Custom'.

I haven't done it for a while so, as a guide, today I ran 'The Black Death' track in SLI and recorded it with FRAPS for 150 seconds as a benchmark using the stock game, that is, no mods. I got a minimum of 38 fps, a maximum of 247 fps and an average for the test as 101 fps.

Running the same with a single card gave me a minimum of 38 fps, a maximum of 158 fps and an average of 79.

So stock game on my computer can give better fps when using SLI. However, in game I use vertical sync which limits my fps to 60 so I don't really gain much.

There isn't any point in doing it with mods on as all computers will be different.

I am using the 280.26 Win7 drivers.

Thanks Sid, I'm using Nvidia Inspector too.
But for my card there is no benefit using SLI :(

Ask yourself: what are you going to use the card mostly for? If it is new games in HD or 3D, then go the GTX580 (wouldn't worried about 590). If you are only going to play IL-2 plus the occasional new game, then get something like a GTX460 or if budget can reach, a GTX570.

Personally I'm still running a GTX260 and it handles almost everything at decent settings (except CloD, but only 580s or SLI setups seem to work with it).
