I think you did a great job, Japancat. This is much more like the real thing you see in the gun camera videos. About the damage in planes, I think damage models differ a lot from one plane to another. Some of them have been worked out really well and others are really poor, but I guess this depends on the authors.

Really like the new effects, JapanCat- and you are right- you do get a flash from 12.7 & 7.7mm incendiary bullets- and sometimes a 'puff' of smoke (and probably paint/debris/fuel from the aircraft the bullet is hitting).

It is too simple to say 'when you shoot metal you dont create smoke or dust'- you arent just shooting 'metal', you are shooting an aircraft with all its various systems- hydraulics, electrics, oxygen, fuel and oil- not to mention things like seats, insulation, ammunition, parachutes- all of which are going to react to having a bullet put through them......

Let me defend myself by saying I'm talking about machine guns and NOT explosive rounds. I think the 2 should look different from each other.

US 50cal against soft skinned Betty bombers:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OQhPHL4Yr0
Note no "puffs" just flames and sparks.

Mixed gun cam footage (US 50cals against harder Fw190s: at 0:26 and 1:25)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53LGJhjYICM
Notice 0:26 and 1:25... There are sometimes "puffs" but they are gone almost instantly and I suspect are more from the impact than an actual "dust particle" effect. It's gone just as fast as a flash would be.

As you say there is plenty of stuff behind the wing or the skin that may react badly... but that should have its own vapor/particle trail. The impact itself is rather quick and benign.

I think the original youtube link from JapanCat is a step towards a better looking IL2, but I also think the 7mm "puffs" are too much and the 12.7mm "puffs" look like cannon shells exploding. In my opinion it could be a bit better.

If he doesn't agree with me, then so be it.

50 cals DO produce smoke puffs when hitting, it is hard to find out what is causing smoke, but many videos, taken in different parts of the world (PTO ETO) show it. Problem is that sometimes, for some reasons there's no puffs or sparks/flashes even when we know they hit. Fact is you can see them clearly on many guncam footage.

Here is a link to a thread (with link to video references i collected on YT) i started a while ago, on the zoo forum:

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/23110283/m/6641060368/p/2

"Found this:

Look directly at 0:44;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSDE47vNq1Q

Look carefully at the starboard wing.

More footage though it is difficult to decide whether they are from 50 cal only or 20mm + 50cals (P38). Please look especially at 1:24.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...N5PI&feature=related

Here at 3:06, german (no that's a Bettylol) bomber attacked:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53LGJhjYICM

And for those who did not look at the first links i posted (in their integrality) here is another one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89b3vVwMDDY

Look at min 3, especially starboard wing tip.

Hi

Bullet Hit is as a result of much by the type of the machine gun and the hit situation.
But IL2 is simple, so all expressions are difficult.
Therefore it's just imitated.

Smoke of 12.7mm occurs by 44%.
For example smoke generates 7.7mm in ArmAII and Il-2 Clod.
Research of the latest simulator is trusted.

Hi Japancat

Your mod reminds me of Getter's excellent one based on Maven's one!

Looks fine JapanCat,

but one thing, 7.7mm  bullets normally do not create puffs of such size unless they hit dry dirt. Also the effect is to regular, a more intermittent effect would be more convincing.
Why don't you try it with 20 mm bullets there for instance incendiary- and explosive rounds will give specific puffs, whereas inert rounds will only create puffs if something else then ust skin is hit (<-- still some puff of color being torn away.

Best Regards

I like to snipe, it's hard to see the bullets hit from far away, this would help a lot
