This type of aircraft was also used as a nightfighter, a unique role for a type that was conceived as a single engined dive bomber - which only proves excellent performance of the craft.
Some existing D4Y-2s were modified into single seaters, with gunner cockpit now being occupied with a single (twin in some planes, according to some sources) 20 mm Type-99-II cannon, being aimed at an angle of 30° towards horizon. Due to lack of radar, their night time efficiency remains questionable. According to japanese sources, best D4Y-2S pilot was Yoshimitsu Naka, who downed 5 B-29s and damaged 4 more.
