These use too many polys for a model of this type.
Consider how the 20mm oerlikon gun is made.

Is this correct. I have highlighted one side of polygons that make side of the hull

apart form the big black line is this near correct

I assume you have used Normal Mapping in the UVW Editor.

If you have selected Top and Bottom Mapping try instead selecting Side Mapping, so that the checker pattern is regular along the side of the hull.
The ideal is to have no stretching of the skin, which you will see if the checker pattern forms regular squares.

Its generally impossible to avoid some stretching of the skin but you should try to minimise it.

You need to sort out the smoothing groups on the bow to get rid of the triangular patterns.
Working in UVW Editor fine tune the mapping by shifting each vertex so that your black line at the waterline becomes straight and of regular width.

k will do. I haven't done any smoothing groups yet should it be 1 for the hull 1 for the deck and 1 for the cabin and the gun tubes

No -- Its 5 for the hull plus 1 for the deck, which I assume is part of the same "object".
The TT's are separate objects so do not need to have different smoothing groups to the hull.

Select the object and click on Auto Smooth
This will apply a default set of smoothing groups.
Then manually adjust as you require, by selecting polys and checking the groups in Surface Properties section of the menus.

Do not use any of the Modifiers like MeshSmooth or TurboSmooth.
They just add lots of unwanted polys to your mesh.

I have reworked the texture towards the hull and apart form the front it looks all good. I applied the smoothing groups but only to the hull I'm leaving the rest for after .

thanks for everyone's help and support.
