hidden Ki-44s for DBW *v2.0*
« on: July 26, 2011, 12:02:03 PM »

hello

this is a pack of the classfiles nescessary to enable all the hidden Ki-44. just drop the plane_Ki-44 Hidden_Cutouts_DBW folder into #DBW and add the lines to the air.ini
All models have the same 3D and the same cockpit as it is now.

credit for the original idea to enable them goes to theMiSfiT !

* V2.0*

http://www.gamefront.com/files/20686097/plane_Ki-44+Hidden_Cutouts_DBWv2.zip

air.ini
Ki-44-II-Otsu           air.KI_44_IIOTSU 2                     NOINFO  ja01  DESERT
Ki-44-II-Hei            air.KI_44_IIHEI 2                     NOINFO  ja01  DESERT

breakdown:

Ki-44-II-Otsu
2x12.7 mm  (default)   *  see note below

additionally:
2xHo301 40mm (9rounds each)
2x60kg
droptanks + 2x40mm

Ki-44-II-Hei
4x12.7 mm (default)

2x60kg
droptanks

Otsu_late dropped to spare a classfile. it brings no additional stuff to the game as it is. The FM is the regular Otsu and the loadout is not historical.

* note:
Otsu was manufactured from s/n 1356 beginning in August 1943 (after ko). A lot of references imply that otsu had 40mm wing armament
as standard. It could be fitted as 'special equipment' to this version but the standard otsu configuration was cowling 12.7 weapons
only and no wing armament (same as Hayabusa).

Hei was manufactured from s/n 1750 beginning in April 1944 (this was the version with 4 x 12.7).

I don't know why early references confused the sequence but can only speculate a belief at that time that the 40mm was introduced as a
late-war anti-B-29 weapon rather than during the late summer of 1943. What is apparent from intelligence reports is that some otsu
(as manufactured) were retro-fitted with 12.7 wing armament, becoming effectively hei. There were a series of armament trials held
between otsu and hei manufacture that effectively decided the subsequent hei configuration.

Is there a KI-44 with late gunsig? Is terrible use the stardart gunsig in a dogfight and KI-44 is a very good plane.

no.

that is why they where hidden in the first place. that cockpit does not exist yet.
actually, the telescopic gunsight was used until very late. not all planes got converted in that area when they got  a weapons overhaul.

The way it is done in the Ki-44 cockpit is quite okay for me. I can shoot down all the enemies I like.

Maybe TKM 1.3 will have more on this. until then it is what it is.

EDIT:
There are various sources with varying information as to what subtype used what weapons loadout.
Bueschels Aircam Aviation Series 25 for example is not exactly telling the same as Famous Aircraft of the World 16 (an original Japanese-only book)
The Loadout presented here is consistent with what is presented on Wikipedia Japan.

Interesting Info regarding the telescopic sight: on ACAS#25 page 40 there is a great pic of a 40mm armed Ki-44 with the telescopic sight. As a matter of fact there are more pics showing squads in late 44 with lots of telescopic sights still in the planes. so this feature is not completely unrealistic here.

 8) First of all Thanks again. The sight isn't that bad for this armament. If you have good weapons, you can shoot with Ring and Bread? too. Most horrifying for me and Telescopic-Gunsights is the Fokker and a few endless pain hrs of trying to familiarize, compared to it, this is easy.

Yes!  thanks I missed watching those 40's arc through the the thin air at 9k up.
It's a long climb up and not many rounds to lob but that's why it's so cool when you get a hit 8)

Did any of the KI 44s carry 20mm cannon, from what I read the late model Hei did but whats accurate, I mean If they were used to intersept B29s it would be insane trying that with 12.7 cal mgs

If I want the Tojos to carry 20mm wing cannon can I adjust the weapons ini file for them or is it motr invoved than that?

Did any of the KI 44s carry 20mm cannon

Yes, the Ki-44 IIIa had four 20mm Ho-5 cannons and the Ki-44 IIIb had an even heavier loadout of four 20mm Ho-5 cannons and two 37 mm Ho-203 cannons.
These were heavily armed aircraft.

The Ki-44 IIIa and Ki-44 IIIb also had the more powerful 2000 hp Nakajima Ha-145 engine.
The Ki-44 IIIb was the final Ki-44 variant. Production ended in late 1944.

In  what theaters did the Ki-44 operate apart from home island defence, from what I can see it was mainly China & Burma. Did any see action in the Solomons & Indonesia ect?
