FSX - moving Hard Drive?
« on: July 21, 2011, 05:21:14 AM »

Guys,

I want to move my FSX installation from my G drive to my D drive - can I just copy it across and reset the .exe location or is an uninstall/re-install advisable ??

Better don't even try to.
This was an easy task back in the days of FS9, but with FSX it becomes almost impossible.
The better way is to backup all addons, additional aircraft etc., then start with a clean reinstall on your new target drive and restore your addons there.

You might want to try google with "move fsx to another drive" too, but won't give you any better results.

I simply cut and pasted my FSX game folder from my C:Drive onto an external  drive,
and I did it with NP

I even have add-on aircraft I have purchased
and they all copied over with NP at all

NP is just short for No Problems

I just cut and pasted ,same way I cut and paste an IL-2 game folder from one drive to another
create a new shorcut and away you go

I've been moving, reinstalling, screwing up FSX since it came out, probably 50 times. I agree with Mike, what you get with a reinstall in a proper registry entry plus a fresh install which I've found to be a cleaner way to go.

Suggest this site, the Dr, knows what he is about:  http://www.simforums.com/forums/setting-up-fsx-and-how-to-tune-it_topic29041.html

Hm,then why does my FSX play without any glitches at all

I cut and pasted the whole FSX game folder from my C:Drive drive to an external
I have around $300 worth of paid for aircraft, digital satellite mesh ete ete
My FSX game folder is over 60 Gb

Done this over a year ago,and my FSX runs great on my external drive
with no registry hassles or anything

Boomer my man,

My guess is the external drive bit (plus luck as Mike said?  :).

My move was to an internal Intel SSD or back to the Raptor or back to the SSD, etc, etc, ect...  ;)

Even so,I have cut and pasted FSX around on C:Drive before to other folders
not just the one time to my external,I have done this on more than one occasion
as I have upgraded my external drives more than once or twice and now run a 1 TB External

I must have cut and pasted my FSX folder half a dozen times or more with out any trouble at all
I've even done the same with X-Plane without trouble

I've never had to re0install FSX for any reason,
I have so many added free planes, paid for planes, added free scenery ,paid for scenery
sat. mesh ,clouds, sun, you name it and it's modded in my FSX

I also never had to go through all that fiasco of re-booting the game between installing the DVD's ete
Never had a problem ever installing anything into FSX,not much different than IL-2
I don't usually have any trouble installing anything into IL-2 either

Of coarse a read everything more than twice,I take my time installing
and I could care less if I install something next week or next month
so I am never in a rush to install anything into any game
and may be why I usually have no hassles installing things and rarely ever have trouble with my games

I use crap cleaner,I run it often
I have another couple of registry sweepers I use

I just honestly don't see why it has to be so much trouble installing FSX as in that guys tutorial lol
or why anyone would have to re-install the game like 50 times

let alone not be able to simply cut and paste the game folder over to another drive,
run crap cleaner and then create a shortcut and fire the game up

It has worked so many times for me,going from one area to another on my C:Drive, then to another internal drive, then to an extrerenal
then back to my C:Drive and then again to another external and back again to my C:Drive and then even again.... to my new 1 TB external

and not once, have I ever had a problem
It's not luck I can tell you that right now, luck would not work a half a dozen times or more

You know,
it does not hurt anything to just try and copy paste the game folder over to an external and try it lol

To me it seems like a lot of thing,it is made out to be much much harder than it is
Just have to browse the forum for all the posts saying"I installed everything right to the letter of the read me" ..."and it does not work" rofl

A bunch of us can install whatever we like with out any trouble, and there are others who seem not to be able to install anything
including just installing the basic game it seems, from that guys tutorial on installing FSX

So,I don't know
but cutting and pasting FSX works every time I have ever had to do it
and I have done it many m nay times in all sorts of different drives, locations, internal, external

But,I guess I am just lucky  :D
