Please, first question of mine:
It seems that at that time : spring 1940, most airfields were only grass fields. Does someone know about concrete or bitume runways on some airfields ?

The only one I found was Amsterdam Schipol but outside the map (so won't be there)

Thx for any answer !

Voilà!

Brilliant! Can I ask what version of 1946 or mod base it might require - your creating for/on?

Hi Gil!

I've only recently discovered your work, which I am slowly adding piece by piece to my newly rebuilt 4.09m game (I'm currently working with your CanonUK Channel_Beta re-textures).  I still prefer building my own installs the now 'Classic' 4.09 modactivated way, and your work (plus Canon's of course) have transformed my game, which has as one focus, actions in NorthWest Europe featuring New Zealand airmen like Alan Deere.

Deere claimed his first victories, two Bf-109s, over France May 1940 during a dramatic resuce of a downed pilot:

Quote
"On 23 May 1940 Deere took part in a daring rescue operation. He and Pilot Officer Allen escorted their flight commander, James Leathart, to France where he was to land a Miles Master trainer and pick up the CO of 74 Squadron who had made a forced landing on the airfield at Calais-Marck. The pick-up was made, with Allen watching from 8000 feet and Deere circling at low level. An approaching formation of Bf 109’s was spotted by Allen as the Master taxied out for take-off.

As a strafing Bf 109 pulled out of its dive, presenting a perfect target, Deere fired a short burst and the aircraft stalled and then crashed into the sea. Deere, climbing to help Allen, crossed the path of two 109’s, one of which turned towards him. Deere also turned, firing at the second one, which rolled over and dived away. Pursuing the first one, he caught up at treetop height and pursued him, firing off his remaining ammunition before the German headed for home.

Diving towards the coast Deere called up Allen and was relieved to hear him answer. In the interim the Master had taken off and headed for Hornchurch. In the action three Bf 109’s had been shot down and three others severely damaged."

I'm looking forward to flying this mission and others on your new map, thanks so much for your efforts!

Enfin une carte qui va permettre de refaire la Campagne de France!
Ca manquait vraiment.
Une petite idée de la date d'arrivée dans les bacs?
Merci pour tout.

Please, Gil, don't forget the French airbase of Vitry-le-Francois.  Was the home base of the famous 6eme Escadrille of GC III-7, at the beginning of the german attack on France.

I'll look at that... my problem is that I can hardly find some documentation on german & french airfields at that period... and there were so many airfields in Champaign & Picardy in 1940  :o
(and I also need to cover the big surface involved)

For example, a lot of dutch airfields will be there because dutch people sent me good photos and plans  ;)

EDIT : unfortunately Vitry le Francois is outside the map (south-east of Rheims...)

Hello, GilB57!

Am I allowed to give you the proper spelling for the German bases you've listed there? If I shouldn't forget this posting, please ...  ;D

  • Mönchengladbach Holt
  • Düsseldorf Lohausen
  • Bönninghardt
  • Essen Mülheim
  • Köln Budsweilerhof & Ostheim (2 bases)

The German umlauts suck sometimes for non-German speakers for sure ... ;)
