JAVA - Forgotten Battle map
« on: March 03, 2011, 09:00:35 PM »

REQUEST
Recently I've become more interested in the early Pacific battles so I just got a new book, Bloody Shambles part 2, and it covers in depth the forgotten battle for Java.
Like many others, I know very little about this part of the war.  IL2 has helped with the flyable CW-21 but sadly there is not a Java map to fly on.  The Dutch air force as well as an American P-40 squadron were there.

Java is a long island that has several allied airfields.  I don't even know yet if the Japanese had land bases (perhaps in Borneo?) or if they exclusively used Navy planes from aircraft carriers.

A FMB map could possibly consist of Java + part of Borneo (if necessary for Japanese bases).

Who wants to make this map of Java?

edit:  This link has the basic background of the campaign & map... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Java_(1942)

I already have a good working version of Western Java aka Batavia up. There should be a link to a pre-beta in the Maps in Progress thread here at SAS.

The main problem with the map getting finished is once again objects. There are really not enough suitable objects to complete the map in a suitable manner.  Or maybe someone else can come up with some good ideas for making villages and Dutch inspired colonial towns ...

The textures may also need some updating, as I made this one a while ago.

I started work on an East Java map some time ago (together with West and East Borneo maps) but haven't done any further work on them recently. The basic maps are up and running but require huge amounts of work- textures, rivers, towns etc etc- not to mention aerodromes. Similarly big_yamato had started work on a West Java + South Sumatra map (I have an alpha version) but unfortunately I haven't heard from him for a few years now so presumably this project is dead.

Fusek,

For what year is the map posted above? It could be very useful to get more contemporary data, instead of always having to rely on Google maps and then try and retro-configure a map by trial and error.

Would it be possible to get a copy in higher res perhaps?

The above map is 1868 I believe.  NEI railroads was a weird place, with lots of small private railways. Ill upload a .zip with all the stuff ive found yesterday.

Also, this is handy, a list of Indonesian/Dutch names of geographical locations:

Perhaps this link is of any help?

Very detailed US Army maps of Indonesia. Not WWII but 1954.

I have a full size staffmapof Java ( almost 1mx 1.5m) from 1938, but havent gotten around to scan it.

Uufflakke, would you be interested in making a object pack much like your european houses? Dutch Colonial style was beutiful!

Thanx for the offer but I don't have much time in doing repaints lately. First I want to finish the retexturing of the Manchuria map and even for that I don't have much freetime.
But Dutch colonial style was beautiful indeed.
