Unexplained lines in shallow water & reefs
« on: February 12, 2011, 05:27:10 PM »

The following pictures basically illustrate my problem. This is a duplicate of my post over at AAS.

Water texture (Solid color so I know it is not causing the problem):

Lines on the reefs at Yap from my Western Carolines map:

Same thing at Kwajalein on the new Marshalls map using the same textures:

Why are there lines? In mymap_c there are no visible lines, no matter how much I smooth and blur the reefs. Has anyone found a good way to get around this problem? It practically ruins the look of the entire Marshall Islands map since there are so many reefs.

I've seen it on quite a few maps. I think it's caused by the edge of the land textures protruding out into the sea. Remember, each map_T pixel is 200m x 200m, so the coast often cuts through them.
Don't know what can be done about it though.

It'll look even worse in excellent mode.

The newer map_c tools seem to produce this effect. I had the same problem with Darwin. I ended up using the older map_c tools once I had finalised the map_c to make this go away.

Cheers, Neil :)

Neil,

Good tip! Where can I get the old map tools? I am pretty sure I have the newest ones.

If someone in the meantime doesn't have a link handy, I'll dig around in the old machine and upload it somewhere :)

Cheers, Neil :)

Here you go ;)

You'll need Java installed for this to work.

I'm a bit rusty on map making but if I remember correctly you need to have coastriver or coastsea (RGB 30 and 31) around the coastal fringes to avoid these blocky patterns. Its something to do with a LOD effect applied to the coastline detail.  This can be fixed easily in FMB Map Editor

Ashe

I loaded the map to have a look. My theory above is rubbish.
Must be something to do with map_c

Is the interval in the pattern 32 pixels?

The old mapC tools had a transform utility for correcting a visual anomaly at 32 pix intervals.

-- Just had a look at the tools posted by Neil. transform.bat is the function missing from the latest MapC tools but it is included in the set Neil posted.

--- Nice map by the way.

I think that by creating shallow water on map_c (unformatted) you are probably creating the too obvious geometrical patterns that appear on the screenshots ...

Since there are many ways of making shallows on map_C, perhaps you could describe how you do it. Or perhaps you should simply take a good look at map_c and try to eliminate the recurring geometries, if you can see them that is. However, I've usually found that if something like this appears in the game, you can usually see the reason why on map_c ...

Usually using tools like a 'soften' or 'smudge' brush can eliminate the geometry on the shallow water areas ... or it can just as well accentuate it. So take into account what works best for you.

But don't forget - on the unformatted map_c, often referred to as 'my_mapC' ... and should you make changes, don't forget to run it through the Map C Toolbox Utility again ...

I just now got to try out the new tools, but then noticed you said I need java.  I don't have a java editor/compiler/whatever installed. what/where should I get it? I don't really know anything about java.

Oh, I have Java installed, but when I followed the instructions in the readme with mymap_c in the same folder, nothing appeared to happen. Is there a specific way I need to run the java script?
