Vampires of Guadalcanal posted now!
« on: February 12, 2011, 03:54:17 PM »

If you want to fly over the Solomons in a P-40 I've got just the right thing for you. It's my latest campaign, and it's called "Vampires of Guadalcanal":

This is a 13-mission static campaign portraying the actions of the 44th Fighter Squadron ("The Vampires") in 1943. During the heavy fighting in the Solomons they became the top scoring P-40 USAAF Squadron of all that year, and a number of its pilot became aces, including its soon to be CO, Robert "Westy" Westbrook.

You can download it here: http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&screen=4797

You will follow the squadron from January, when they first arrived on Guadalcanal, as the first all P-40 squadron being assigned to that battered island, over the furious fighting that followed on the Japanese withdrawal, all the way to the Allied landings on Russel Island and later New Georgia (“Operation Toenails”), with the finale in August, when US ground forces finally captured the Japanese airstrip at Munda Point, which was the big goal for the operations.

The campaign follows the historical course of the fighting, and most mission are based on actual operations involving the 44th Fighter Squadron. You will take on the persona of a fictive 44th FS pilot, Dwayne Francis.

Included in this campaign is 18 skins, made by the following skinners: Macwan, VP Media, Jesters Ink, Buglords, 78th Sentai, Defrag, Imme and Kamikuza. Thanks guys! Also: I always welcome tips and suggestions when it comes to historical skins, showing actual aircraft used in this campaign!

I've partly made this campign to try my hand at the new functions in 4.10 FMB, and I must say that I really like some of them. Also I actually like the P-40, which is quite a fun aircraft to fly. And here you get to try two types. the P-40E and the P-40M.

Thanks for looking!

Hey Poltava, the campaign looks great. Any chance it will run in 4.09?

I don't know - have a try! That will be an interesting experiment, to see how the old game engine treats the new code. :P

EDIT: I have checked, and I think that *IF* you have the Solomons map that comes with 4.10, it will run. Notice that the old "The Slot" map is obviously not identical to the 4.10 version.

I will check that out. Maybe 4.10 FMB is more strict when it comes to "jumping" aircraft to nearest airfield. It is of course supposed to take off from the sea...

EDIT: I have checked it now, and the Japanese seaplane at Cape Esperance takes off from the water. As it should, in my mission 2, the one that's in the posted campaign. So I'm kind of baffled here. It works as it should in MY version. Do you have a screen-shot of this anomaly?

Ok, will check that one too. That could be a case of FMB "jumping" the aircraft to the nearest airfield.

EDIT: Yes, you are correct: that US seaplane wants to start from "Fighter 2". Naughty boy. I have now put him back to sea, where he should be. And the campaign download has been updated. Thanks for the heads-up!

Try again! I deleted the old version, with the seaplane error in mission 3, and uploaded a new one.
