Big is beautiful 2
« on: February 02, 2011, 09:55:14 PM »

I just put a deposit on one of these

possibly the last one in Australia, no longer made, bought it in an Australian shop for less.

58" long over 3500 parts a true challenge to those plastic ninja skills in smuggling this in ;D

Congratulations Dude! That´s a fine model !
I have a few pictures of some guys building one from a model forum a few years back.
A very detailed model with metal pieces and everything. Its HUGE.
Check around with Google for Dora Cannon model builders and you might find some good
help putting that monster together. Its a real BIG model.
I also seen some images a few years back of some guys making a Dora from scratch and
it was about the size of a medium sized van!!  ??? Unbelievable great looking model, but very hard
to carry around  :P
Good luck with it and I defenitly want to see images of you making this thing.

See these pictures for some ideas...

Nice model! I see a 1:72 scale Gustav cannon every time I go to my local hobby shop and pay at the register. I thought it was monstrous even at that scale...

I remember finding one a while back on the net, built by a guy called Peter Shaw, don't know if this is the one you meant max

I'll give you an in box review with lots of pics when I pick it up at the end of march (if the wife doesn't kill me first, we'lll i could live in the box).

The kit is not without controversy though, particularly the barrel length. Some say that it is based on plans for the Lang-Gustav a 570mm smooth bore version with a longer barrel.

There are claims that the barrel is 33cm too long, or 28 cm too long, and 5.7cm too long There are/were aluminium barrels available but they are the same length.

Soar Art aren't entirely convinced yet either and want to see some specific documentation. The barrel was assembled from a number of sections, the breech separate it's hard to work out exactly what dimensions refer to what. I'm not taking a saw to anything untill I'm really convinced, it's easty to shorten but harder to lengthen the barrel.

Here is a fantastic build by the fellow who believes the barrel is faaaar too long

have a look

I saw that post a few months back of those Portuguese guys making that model . Unbelievable attention to detail they
did on it. A winner for sure, Superb detailing!
I have all the images saved in my hardrive to admire when I turn 99! AHAAHAH  :D
Just soooo cool to look at that model.

Hey that´s right Highlander, that´s the guy I was refering to awhile back. Peter Shaw.
Now that there is one HUGE and BEAUTIFULY crafted Schwere Gustav/Dora model. Just look at that thing!!  ???
Good thing he´s got a big garage to store it in, or just leave the damn car outside  ;D LOL
I also have all the pictures of that model and how they built it. Impressive build, I which I had the space to make one too.
Take a closer look at it... http://www.vonabt.co.uk/models/Dora/DoraBuild.htm

See this too - http://johkaz.byethost10.com/dora.html

Lewicide I will take a look at my collection of WW2 PDf books and see if I have something on this super-cannon.
I do believe I have a great book on this thing on me, I have just about anything related to WW1 and WW2 in
my collection. I will send it your way for you to use as reference and look at the details of it while you make the model.
Good luck with this model build .

Safely stashed

for the moment.

It's made of a weird plastic, not the usual styrene, more like the stuff lego bricks are made of. Probably have to go for a diffent adhesive.
