Colors, Tints, Hues of Maps in 4.10
« on: January 01, 2011, 06:29:24 PM »

Now that I've been able to get a reasonable number of non-standard maps up and working in 4.10, it seems to me that perhaps (?) in 4.10 the colors are somewhat different from that in 4.09.

Now, this is not necessarily undesirable, because for the first i seem to be noticing an improvement in an aspect of 4.10 above 4.09. In that the colors of new maps appear to be more agreeable to the eye, less harsh, less saturated.

There are enough maps that i know well how they look at certain times of the day and in certain weather conditions, and it really seems that in 4.10 they look different and somehow better.

So, this is mainly out of curiosity, but does anyone know if the game has been modified in 4.10 in the way it handles colors? If so, it is an agreeable surprise ...

I can't answer that question but will confirm that i have found the same difference in colours, its almost like i've up-graded the graphics card and i think the colours are more agreeable as well!

I've continued flying simple missions on some of my maps and I still think that the range of colors is more agreeable in 4.10. It's nice to be able to praise the update and in this area at least there is a marked improvement to be seen, even by a skeptic like me ...

An interesting test is to set up a mission at a fixed time of day, with fixed weather conditions and then fly it, while changing the date of the month each new time you restart the same mission. The range of tints and hues changes quite markedly between the months. This is most likely due to the changing hours of sunset and sunrise, but even so, on 4.09 maps, there were often sharp cut-off times when late afternoon changed into a red dusk. Flying at 18:59 was completely different from flying at 19:00h for instance ...

Now it seems that the color changes due to height of the sun in the sky, occur more gradually and with a wider range of possible tints and hues and saturation levels for the map colors.

Could you post pics before/after ? Maybe it's possible to see the difference only in game.  ::)
Well seems a good idea for me since i always desaturate my textures, i hate stock colours
Maybe TD heard our request Agracier :)

Here is a progression of screenshots from the Hankow map, set at 17:22 hours, hazy weather, 4444m clouds.

The shots were taken in the same area in June, September, December and March of 1937 ...

I'm not sure for the weather as "sky colors, sun colors" if they changed anything (I doubt because they didn't fix wrong declination and azimuth of the Sun), but I'm pretty sure HOW they changed the terrain. And you will know too how to do that in your maps  ;) (maybe I will write it tonight).

Its still funny that they didn't figure out how to properly make and use bump maps (acute lack of creativity  :P )

I wouldn't give much hope on that.

These are screens from 4.09. Is it something like that? (for the terrain colors?)

I think that in 4.10, the changing of the month changes all colors, not only terrain, but the sky and cloud color as well. I would suppose that that is done by changing a .mat of some kind in accordance with the month and day ...

If you look in the screenhots I posted, you'll see the whole image changing hues and tints and overall color ...

I think that was also in 4.09, colors are looking different when you change month in load.ini file of some map. Its more "visible" now when we can see it immediately after changing. But maybe they really added something. I wouldn't say some mat file, maybe some opengl feature (which could be seen in info when hitting "tab & shift", would try this later).

this might be a 'side effect' of the changes they've made to the high altitude sky, possibly...
that's the only 'color' change mentioned in the readme, so maybe they are somehow related?
either way, i agree, the colors in 4.10 do look more soothing to the eye.  :D

Can't say I noticed the colours yet as I've mainly been trying to install things rather than fly the sim.

What I noticed is the water seems to have a different quality to it, a smoother look maybe, almost dreamy.

4.10 start up.

4.9 start up.

Maybe what Agracier is experiencing shows there has been some tweaking done to the graphics. 8)  Although I suppose someone may have re-shot the vid, but it is here that it seems most noticable as
you first fire up the sim.

I use perfect settings in both.

Wishing you all the best, Pete. ;D

If TD tweaked the graphics they didn't advertise the fact in any of their videos or the official readme. Perhaps it's a byproduct of altering the high altitude sky so it's no longer dark blue.

It could hurt to ask the TD folks what's going on.
