What is so special about a "New Slot"
« on: July 16, 2009, 02:30:36 AM »

What is so special about a "New Slot"Nada.

It seems that the trend lately among many modders is to "re-mystefy" modding. Many obvious reasons for this, but thats not for this thread.

One of these mysterious things is the description of "New Slot Planes", and the way these get presented sometimes creates the idea that there are somehow a limited number of open slots that needs to be carefully controled.

This is rubbish. A new slot is simply another way of saying a plane has its OWN slot. And the slots are basically limitless. To "create" a new slot is simply a matter of writing the plane's main classfile and naming it anything that IS NOT in the game yet.

Other things involved in plane making is much more difficult.

For example, if the plane is a new or modified 3d model, thats a lot of work.A new flightmodel requires a bit of input as well, but usually a healthy dose of restraint and cross referencing can lighten that load a lot.

Performing tricks with classfiles can be a messy and time consuming thing. But in the end we all do it because we love it.

No mysteries required.

And all you NEED is love.

that's right, far as i can see.  i've seen those posts (especially in a SHALL NOT BE NAMED place) that really tries hard to mystify or bamboozle the process.  especially of making slots.  i've even seen posts where it seems they purposely (apparently) try to make NEW slots something that only Brainiacs can do, i guess to underline their own self-importance or what not.  all of that's hooey.  again far as i can see with my limited experience there is an endless potential for slots.  to me, it's the somewhat dated (and a bit hokey) tools we have to use, the somewhat steep learning curve of those tools, and a lack of information in certain areas that make it all pretty hard.  nothing particularly 'special' about it and it does not take a brainiac...  but i think (my opinion) it 'does' take dogged 'i ain't gonna' give up' determination and a strong constitution.

 ;D

heck, if 'i' can make slots and mod...  trust me, anybody can.  ---if they want to bad enough, that is.

Yup.

You can make a new slot in 10 minutes.

All the other stuff, that takes time, but slots are easy.

To say, when and after the dust settles from the soon to be purchased SOW, how many and who will stay abroad with IL2 to finally learn what there is to learn to, make new slots. Its going to be the hardened few that somehow will finagle the right stuff to produce a new slot Plane into this old Sim, I do want to do that my self but (in real life) I get too bothered and accept them from those that do, I am so grateful to those that have and those that will. I dont know how long IL2 will last, but dammit I will always be looking in anticipation for that new/next new slot. Thanks Fellas for the fun and work just to play this game.
