Color conversion - help available?
« on: December 15, 2010, 01:47:41 AM »

Dear neighbors,

after decades of abstinence from plastic model building I want to start again. I already have a number of models which I want to assemble (Fw-190A-8 1/32 from Hasegawa, Bf-109-K 1/32 from Revell, He-219 1/48 from Tamiya), only time is lacking. But before I start I should buy the colors I need for the paint schemes.

There is one problem, though. The models I bought are from Revell, Hasegawa and Tamiya. I don't want to be too creative concerning the paint schemes, so I will stick to the recommendations given in the assemblys. However, I don't want to buy each and every color pot which is mentioned.

Is there any table or info available telling me which Revell color value corresponds to which Tamiya or Hasegawa value, and where can I find it? I tried to google, but I suppose I asked the wrong questions - I couldn't find any article which seems to contain what I'm looking for.

Anybody who can help me?

Best greetings and wishes,
Yours

I usually use this one, bear in mind it's not exact, just nearest colour

Luft colours have long been the bane of modlers, basicly its the same as doing a south east asia vietnam colour scheme, there is no right or wrong, pick a plane, find photographic evidence of said plane, as many photos as possible then pick paints to match it, eyeball it, and if it looks right, then i assure you then it will be right, i have been modeling luft aircraft for many years, i mainly use Xtracolour RLM series, but i have found that humbrol greys and green while eyeballing also match very very nicely.

Many thanks for your fast help!

I did some more research, unsing the pointers that you gave me at hand, and found some tools that might be useful to others here as well. I don't know about the quality - that's what you have to judge by yourself - but have a look if you're interested:

"The Ultimate Model Paint Conversion Chart": http://www.paint4models.com/

"RAL color chart": http://www.ralcolor.com/

Have fun
